Zusammenfassung: | The role of the Phoenicians in the economy, culture and politics of the ancient Mediterranean was as large as that of the Greeks and Romans, and deeply interconnected with that 'classical' world, but their lack of literature and their oriental associations mean that they are much less well-known. This book brings state-of-the-art international scholarship on Phoenician and Punic studies to an English-speaking audience, collecting new papers from fifteen leading voices in the field from Europe and North Africa, with a bias towards the younger generation. Focusing on a series of case-studies from the colonial world of the western Mediterranean, it asks what 'Phoenician' and 'Punic' actually mean, how Punic or western Phoenician identity has been constructed by ancients and moderns, and whether there was in fact a 'Punic world' |

This book brings state-of-the-art international scholarship on Phoenician and Punic studies to an English-speaking audience, collecting new papers from fifteen leading voices in the field from Europe and North Africa, with a bias towards the younger generation. Focusing on a series of case-studies from the colonial world of the western Mediterranean, it asks what 'Phoenician' and 'Punic' actually mean, how Punic or western Phoenician identity has been constructed by ancients and moderns, and whether there was in fact a 'Punic world' Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Phoenicians / Western Mediterranean / History Cities and towns, Ancient / Western Mediterranean Carthaginians / Western Mediterranean / History Punic antiquities / Western Mediterranean National characteristics, Mediterranean Group identity / Mediterranean Region Kulturkontakt (DE-588)4033569-0 gnd rswk-swf Phöniker (DE-588)4045822-2 gnd rswk-swf Kulturelle Identität (DE-588)4033542-2 gnd rswk-swf Western Mediterranean / Antiquities, Phoenician Mittelmeerraum (DE-588)4074900-9 gnd rswk-swf Mittelmeerraum West (DE-588)4227442-4 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content 2\p (DE-588)1071861417 Konferenzschrift gnd-content Phöniker (DE-588)4045822-2 s Mittelmeerraum West (DE-588)4227442-4 g Kulturelle Identität (DE-588)4033542-2 s Kulturkontakt (DE-588)4033569-0 s Geschichte z 3\p DE-604 Mittelmeerraum (DE-588)4074900-9 g 4\p DE-604 Quinn, Josephine Crawley (DE-588)1065849311 edt Vella, Nicholas C.
