Zusammenfassung: | Robert Levine has examined the American romance in a historical context. His book offers a fresh reading of the genre, establishing its importance to American culture between the founding of the republic and the Civil war. With convincing historical and literary detail, Levine shows that anxieties about various subversive elements - French revolutionaries, secret societies, Catholic immigrants, African slaves - are central to the fictional worlds of Brockden Brown, Cooper, Hawthorne and Melville. Ormond, The Bravo, The Blithedale Romance, and Benito Cereno are persuasively explicated by Levine to demonstrate that the romance addressed many of the same conflicts and ideals that gave rise to the American republic. Americans conceived of America as a romance, and their romances dramatised the historical conditions of the culture, The fear that conspiracies would subvert the order and integrity of the new nation were recurrent and widespread; Levine makes us see that these fears informed the works of our major romance writers from the turn of the century until the Civil War |

Levine Conspiracy & Romance Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1989 1 online resource (ix, 302 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Cambridge studies in American literature and culture 33 Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Robert Levine has examined the American romance in a historical context. Americans conceived of America as a romance, and their romances dramatised the historical conditions of the culture, The fear that conspiracies would subvert the order and integrity of the new nation were recurrent and widespread; Levine makes us see that these fears informed the works of our major romance writers from the turn of the century until the Civil War Brown, Charles Brockden / 1771-1810 / Ormond Cooper, James Fenimore / 1789-1851 / Bravo Hawthorne, Nathaniel / 1804-1864 / Blithedale romance Melville, Herman / 1819-1891 / Benito Cereno Brown, Charles Brockden 1771-1810 Ormond, or, the secret witness (DE-588)4511272-1 gnd rswk-swf Cooper, James Fenimore 1789-1851 (DE-588)118676865 gnd rswk-swf Cooper, James Fenimore 1789-1851 The Bravo (DE-588)4677808-1 gnd rswk-swf Melville, Herman 1819-1891 Benito Cereno (DE-588)4099311-5 gnd rswk-swf Melville, Herman 1819-1891 (DE-588)118580604 gnd rswk-swf Hawthorne, Nathaniel 1804-1864 The Blithedale romance (DE-588)4450403-2 gnd rswk-swf Brown, Charles Brockden 1771-1810 (DE-588)118674390 gnd rswk-swf Hawthorne, Nathaniel 1804-1864 (DE-588)118709305 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1799-1855 gnd rswk-swf American fiction / 19th century / History and criticism Conspiracies in literature Romanticism / United States Romance (DE-588)4297637-6 gnd rswk-swf USA USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Romance (DE-588)4297637-6 s Geschichte 1799-1855 z 1\p DE-604 Brown, Charles Brockden 1771-1810 Ormond, or, the secret witness (DE-588)4511272-1 u 2\p DE-604 Hawthorne, Nathaniel 1804-1864 The Blithedale romance (DE-588)4450403-2 u 3\p DE-604 Melville, Herman 1819-1891 Benito Cereno (DE-588)4099311-5 u 4\p DE-604 Cooper, James Fenimore 1789-1851 The Bravo (DE-588)4677808-1 u 5\p DE-604 Cooper, James Fenimore 1789-1851 (DE-588)118676865 p 6\p DE-604 Brown, Charles Brockden 1771-1810 (DE-588)118674390 p 7\p DE-604 Hawthorne, Nathaniel 1804-1864 (DE-588)118709305 p 8\p DE-604 Melville, Herman 1819-1891 (DE-588)118580604 p 9\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-09340-8 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-36654-0 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139172158 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 7\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 8\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 9\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
