Zusammenfassung: | This highly original study of the 'manic style' in enthusiastic writing of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries identifies a literary tradition and line of influence running from the radical visionary and prophetic writing of the Ranters and their fellow enthusiasts to the work of Jonathan Swift and Christopher Smart. Clement Hawes offers a counterweight to recent work which has addressed the subject of literature and madness from the viewpoint of contemporary psychological medicine, putting forward instead a stylistic and rhetorical analysis. He argues that the writings of dissident 'enthusiastic' groups are based in social antagonisms; and his account of the dominant culture's ridicule of enthusiastic writing (an attitude which persists in twentieth-century literary history and criticism) provides a powerful and daring critique of pervasive assumptions about madness and sanity in literature |

Clement Hawes offers a counterweight to recent work which has addressed the subject of literature and madness from the viewpoint of contemporary psychological medicine, putting forward instead a stylistic and rhetorical analysis. He argues that the writings of dissident 'enthusiastic' groups are based in social antagonisms; and his account of the dominant culture's ridicule of enthusiastic writing (an attitude which persists in twentieth-century literary history and criticism) provides a powerful and daring critique of pervasive assumptions about madness and sanity in literature Smart, Christopher / 1722-1771 / Jubilate agno Smart, Christopher 1722-1771 (DE-588)118905252 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1600-1770 gnd rswk-swf Englisch Geschichte English literature / 18th century / History and criticism Enthusiasm in literature Literature and mental illness / Great Britain / History / 18th century Literature and society / Great Britain / History / 18th century English language / 18th century / Rhetoric English language / 18th century / Style Levellers Ranters Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Rhetorik (DE-588)4076704-8 gnd rswk-swf Wahnsinn (DE-588)4293233-6 gnd rswk-swf Sprache (DE-588)4056449-6 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Wahnsinn (DE-588)4293233-6 s Rhetorik (DE-588)4076704-8 s Geschichte 1600-1770 z 1\p DE-604 Smart, Christopher 1722-1771 (DE-588)118905252 p Sprache (DE-588)4056449-6 s 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-02202-6 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-55022-2 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511553486 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
