Zusammenfassung: | Although Rwanda is among the most Christian countries in Africa, in the 1994 genocide, church buildings became the primary killing grounds. To explain why so many Christians participated in the violence, this book looks at the history of Christian engagement in Rwanda and then turns to a rich body of original national- and local-level research to argue that Rwanda's churches have consistently allied themselves with the state and played ethnic politics. Comparing two local Presbyterian parishes in Kibuye before the genocide demonstrates that progressive forces were seeking to democratize the churches. Just as Hutu politicians used the genocide of Tutsi to assert political power and crush democratic reform, church leaders supported the genocide to secure their own power. The fact that Christianity inspired some Rwandans to oppose the genocide demonstrates that opposition by the churches was possible and might have hindered the violence |

The fact that Christianity inspired some Rwandans to oppose the genocide demonstrates that opposition by the churches was possible and might have hindered the violence Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1994 gnd rswk-swf Christentum Geschichte Religion Genocide / Rwanda / History / 20th century Genocide / Religious aspects / Christianity Ethnic relations / Religious aspects / Christianity Christentum (DE-588)4010074-1 gnd rswk-swf Kirche (DE-588)4030702-5 gnd rswk-swf Völkermord (DE-588)4063690-2 gnd rswk-swf Völkermord in Ruanda (DE-588)4360701-9 gnd rswk-swf Rwanda / History / Civil War, 1994 / Atrocities Rwanda / History / Civil War, 1994 / Religious aspects Ruanda (DE-588)4076910-0 gnd rswk-swf Ruanda (DE-588)4076910-0 g Christentum (DE-588)4010074-1 s Geschichte z 1\p DE-604 Völkermord in Ruanda (DE-588)4360701-9 s Kirche (DE-588)4030702-5 s Geschichte 1994 z 2\p DE-604 Völkermord (DE-588)4063690-2 s 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-19139-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-26953-7 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511642043 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
