Zusammenfassung: | Social movements have an elusive power but one that is altogether real. From the French and American revolutions to the post-Soviet, ethnic and terrorist movements of today, contentious politics exercises a fleeting but powerful influence on politics, society and international relations. This study surveys the modern history of the modern social movements in the West and their diffusion to the global South through war, colonialism and diffusion, and it puts forward a theory to explain its cyclical surges and declines. It offers an interpretation of the power of movements that emphasizes effects on the lives of militants, policy reforms, political institutions and cultural change. The book focuses on the rise and fall of social movements as part of contentious politics in general and as the outcome of changes in political opportunities and constraints, state strategy, the new media of communication and transnational diffusion |

The book focuses on the rise and fall of social movements as part of contentious politics in general and as the outcome of changes in political opportunities and constraints, state strategy, the new media of communication and transnational diffusion Geschichte Social movements / History Collective behavior / History Social change / History Soziale Bewegung (DE-588)4055707-8 gnd rswk-swf Soziale Gerechtigkeit (DE-588)4236433-4 gnd rswk-swf Politischer Wandel (DE-588)4175047-0 gnd rswk-swf Sozialer Wandel (DE-588)4077587-2 gnd rswk-swf Demokratie (DE-588)4011413-2 gnd rswk-swf Bürgerinitiative (DE-588)4008774-8 gnd rswk-swf Sozialer Wandel (DE-588)4077587-2 s Soziale Bewegung (DE-588)4055707-8 s 1\p DE-604 Politischer Wandel (DE-588)4175047-0 s 2\p DE-604 Soziale Gerechtigkeit (DE-588)4236433-4 s 3\p DE-604 Demokratie (DE-588)4011413-2 s 4\p DE-604 Bürgerinitiative (DE-588)4008774-8 s 5\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-15572-4 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-19890-5 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511973529 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
