Zusammenfassung: | In American history and throughout the Western world, the subjugation perpetuated by slavery has created a unique 'culture of slavery'. That culture exists as a metaphorical, artistic and literary tradition attached to the enslaved - human beings whose lives are 'owed' to another, who are used as instruments by another and who must endure suffering in silence. Tim Armstrong explores the metaphorical legacy of slavery in American culture by investigating debt, technology and pain in African-American literature and a range of other writings and artworks. Armstrong's careful analysis reveals how notions of the slave as a debtor lie hidden in our accounts of the commodified self and how writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne, Rebecca Harding Davis, Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison grapple with the pervasive view that slaves are akin to machines |

Du Bois, Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison grapple with the pervasive view that slaves are akin to machines Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1828-2000 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Psychologie Sklaverei Slavery in literature American literature / 19th century / History and criticism American literature / 20th century / History and criticism American literature / African American authors / History and criticism Slavery in art Slavery / United States / History Slavery / Psychological aspects Slavery / Economic aspects Commodification Reification Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 gnd rswk-swf Sklaverei Motiv (DE-588)4204853-9 gnd rswk-swf USA USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 s Sklaverei Motiv (DE-588)4204853-9 s Geschichte 1828-2000 z DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-1-107-60781-1 (DE-604)BV040481656 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-1-107-02507-3 (DE-604)BV040481656 Cambridge studies in American literature and culture 163 (DE-604)BV046303074 163 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139177252 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
