Zusammenfassung: | In this 2001 book Pamela Thurschwell examines the intersection of literary culture, the occult and new technology at the fin-de-siècle. Thurschwell argues that technologies began suffusing the public imagination from the mid-nineteenth century on: they seemed to support the claims of spiritualist mediums. Talking to the dead and talking on the phone both held out the promise of previously unimaginable contact between people: both seemed to involve 'magical thinking'. Thurschwell looks at the ways in which psychical research, the scientific study of the occult, is reflected in the writings of such authors as Henry James, George du Maurier and Oscar Wilde, and in the foundations of psychoanalysis. This study offers provocative interpretations of fin-de-siècle literary and scientific culture in relation to psychoanalysis, queer theory and cultural history |

This study offers provocative interpretations of fin-de-siècle literary and scientific culture in relation to psychoanalysis, queer theory and cultural history Wilde, Oscar 1854-1900 (DE-588)118632779 gnd rswk-swf James, Henry 1843-1916 (DE-588)118556835 gnd rswk-swf Du Maurier, George 1834-1896 (DE-588)118672673 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1880-1920 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte English literature / 19th century / History and criticism Magic in literature Literature and technology / Great Britain / History / 19th century Literature and technology / Great Britain / History / 20th century English literature / 20th century / History and criticism Psychoanalysis and literature Homosexuality and literature Spiritualism in literature Occultism in literature Telepathy in literature Okkultismus (DE-588)4043421-7 gnd rswk-swf Telekommunikation (DE-588)4059360-5 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Technik Motiv (DE-588)4131616-2 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Okkultismus (DE-588)4043421-7 s Technik Motiv (DE-588)4131616-2 s Geschichte 1880-1920 z DE-604 James, Henry 1843-1916 (DE-588)118556835 p Telekommunikation (DE-588)4059360-5 s 1\p DE-604 Du Maurier, George 1834-1896 (DE-588)118672673 p 2\p DE-604 Wilde, Oscar 1854-1900 (DE-588)118632779 p 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-02243-9 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-80168-3 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511484537 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
