Zusammenfassung: | Readers familiar with Dracula and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde may not know that dozens of equally remarkable Gothic texts were written in Great Britain at the end of the nineteenth-century. This book accounts for the resurgence of Gothic, and its immense popularity, during the British fin de siècle. Kelly Hurley explores a key scenario that haunts the genre: the loss of a unified and stable human identity, and the emergence of a chaotic and transformative 'abhuman' identity in its place. She shows that such representations of Gothic bodies are strongly indebted to those found in nineteenth-century biology and social medicine, evolutionism, criminal anthropology, and degeneration theory. Gothic is revealed as a highly productive and speculative genre, standing in opportunistic relation to nineteenth-century scientific and social theories |

Gothic is revealed as a highly productive and speculative genre, standing in opportunistic relation to nineteenth-century scientific and social theories Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1880-1920 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte English fiction / 19th century / History and criticism Gothic revival (Literature) / Great Britain / History / 19th century Literature and society / Great Britain / History / 19th century Literature and science / Great Britain / History / 19th century Horror tales, English / History and criticism Degeneration in literature Human body in literature Materialism in literature Sex in literature Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Körper Motiv (DE-588)4164424-4 gnd rswk-swf Identität (DE-588)4026482-8 gnd rswk-swf Degeneration Motiv (DE-588)4358255-2 gnd rswk-swf Schauerliteratur (DE-588)4179419-9 gnd rswk-swf Identität Motiv (DE-588)4311101-4 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Schauerliteratur (DE-588)4179419-9 s Identität Motiv (DE-588)4311101-4 s Geschichte 1880-1920 z DE-604 Identität (DE-588)4026482-8 s Körper Motiv (DE-588)4164424-4 s Degeneration Motiv (DE-588)4358255-2 s Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-0-521-55259-2 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-521-60711-7 Cambridge studies in nineteenth-century literature and culture 8 (DE-604)BV042204349 8 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511519161 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
