Zusammenfassung: | Why and how has race become a central aspect of politics during this century? This book addresses this pressing question by comparing South African apartheid and resistance to it, the United States Jim Crow law and protests against it, and the myth of racial democracy in Brazil. Anthony Marx argues that these divergent experiences had roots in the history of slavery, colonialism, miscegenation and culture, but were fundamentally shaped by impediments and efforts to build national unity. In South Africa and the United States, ethnic or regional conflicts among whites were resolved by unifying whites and excluding blacks, while Brazil's longer established national unity required no such legal racial crutch. Race was thus central to projects of nation-building, and nationalism shaped uses of race. Professor Marx extends this argument to explain popular protest and the current salience of issues of race |

Professor Marx extends this argument to explain popular protest and the current salience of issues of race Race discrimination / Case studies Race relations / Case studies Ethnizität (DE-588)4220764-2 gnd rswk-swf Ethnische Beziehungen (DE-588)4176973-9 gnd rswk-swf Brasilien Südafrika (Staat) USA Brazil / Race relations South Africa / Race relations United States / Race relations Südafrika (DE-588)4078012-0 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Brasilien (DE-588)4008003-1 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4522595-3 Fallstudiensammlung gnd-content Brasilien (DE-588)4008003-1 g Ethnizität (DE-588)4220764-2 s Südafrika (DE-588)4078012-0 g USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g 1\p DE-604 Ethnische Beziehungen (DE-588)4176973-9 s 2\p DE-604 3\p DE-604 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-58455-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-58590-3 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511810480 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
