Zusammenfassung: | This book explores the presence of slaves and slavery in Roman literature and asks particularly what the free imagination made of the experience of living with slaves, beings who both were and were not fellow humans. As a shadow humanity, slaves furnished the free with other selves and imaginative alibis as well as mediators between and substitutes for their peers. As presences that witnessed their owners' most unguarded moments they possessed a knowledge that was the object of both curiosity and anxiety. The book discusses not only the ideological relations of Roman literature to the institution of slavery, but also the ways in which slavery provided a metaphor for a range of other relationships and experiences, and in particular for literature itself. It is arranged thematically and covers a broad chronological and generic field |

Press 2000 1 Online-Ressource (XI, 129 S.) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Roman literature and its contexts Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Erscheinungsjahr des E-Books: 2009 This book explores the presence of slaves and slavery in Roman literature and asks particularly what the free imagination made of the experience of living with slaves, beings who both were and were not fellow humans. It is arranged thematically and covers a broad chronological and generic field Geschichte Sklaverei Latin literature / History and criticism Slavery in literature Slavery / Rome / History Slaves / Rome Sklaverei Motiv (DE-588)4204853-9 gnd rswk-swf Antike (DE-588)4068754-5 gnd rswk-swf Sklaverei (DE-588)4055260-3 gnd rswk-swf Latein (DE-588)4114364-4 gnd rswk-swf Sklave (DE-588)4055252-4 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Rom Römisches Reich (DE-588)4076778-4 gnd rswk-swf Griechenland Altertum (DE-588)4093976-5 gnd rswk-swf Latein (DE-588)4114364-4 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Sklaverei (DE-588)4055260-3 s DE-604 Sklave (DE-588)4055252-4 s Antike (DE-588)4068754-5 s Römisches Reich (DE-588)4076778-4 g Griechenland Altertum (DE-588)4093976-5 g Sklaverei Motiv (DE-588)4204853-9 s Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-0-521-77031-6 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-0-521-77969-2 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 0-521-77969-3 (DE-604)BV012921259 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 0-521-77031-9 (DE-604)BV012921259 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511612541 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
