Zusammenfassung: | The Case for the Enlightenment is a comparative study of the emergence of Enlightenment in Scotland and in Naples. Challenging the tendency to fragment the Enlightenment in eighteenth-century Europe into multiple Enlightenments, the distinguished intellectual historian John Robertson demonstrates the extent to which thinkers in two societies at the opposite ends of Europe shared common intellectual preoccupations. Before 1700, Scotland and Naples faced a bleak future as backward, provincial kingdoms in a Europe of aggressive commercial states. Yet by 1760, Scottish and Neapolitan thinkers were in the van of those advocating the cause of Enlightenment by means of political economy. By studying the social and institutional contexts of intellectual life in the two countries, and the currents of thought promoted within them, The Case for the Enlightenment explains this transformation. John Robertson pays particular attention to the greatest thinkers in each country, David Hume and Giambattista Vico |

The Case for the Enlightenment is a comparative study of the emergence of Enlightenment in Scotland and in Naples. John Robertson pays particular attention to the greatest thinkers in each country, David Hume and Giambattista Vico Hume, David 1711-1776 A treatise of human nature (DE-588)4264226-7 gnd rswk-swf Vico, Giambattista 1668-1744 Principi di una scienza nuova (DE-588)4135860-0 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1680-1760 gnd rswk-swf Enlightenment Enlightenment / Scotland Enlightenment / Italy / Naples Aufklärung (DE-588)4003524-4 gnd rswk-swf Wirtschaftstheorie (DE-588)4079351-5 gnd rswk-swf Italien Schottland Neapel (DE-588)4041476-0 gnd rswk-swf Königreich Neapel (DE-588)4041478-4 gnd rswk-swf Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 gnd rswk-swf Schottland (DE-588)4053233-1 gnd rswk-swf Schottland (DE-588)4053233-1 g Wirtschaftstheorie (DE-588)4079351-5 s Aufklärung (DE-588)4003524-4 s Geschichte 1680-1760 z 1\p DE-604 Königreich Neapel (DE-588)4041478-4 g 2\p DE-604 Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 g Neapel (DE-588)4041476-0 g 3\p DE-604 Hume, David 1711-1776 A treatise of human nature (DE-588)4264226-7 u Vico, Giambattista 1668-1744 Principi di una scienza nuova (DE-588)4135860-0 u 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-03572-9 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-84787-2 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511490705 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
