Zusammenfassung: | The most devastating attacks against the Jews of medieval Christian Europe took place during the riots that erupted, in 1391 and 1392, in the lands of Castile and Aragon. For ten horrific months, hundreds if not thousands of Jews were killed, numerous Jewish institutions destroyed, and many Jews forcibly converted to Christianity. Benjamin Gampel explores why the famed convivencia of medieval Iberian society - in which Christians, Muslims and Jews seemingly lived together in relative harmony - was conspicuously absent. Using extensive archival evidence, this critical volume explores the social, religious, political, and economic tensions at play in each affected town. The relationships, biographies and personal dispositions of the royal family are explored to understand why monarchic authority failed to protect the Jews during these violent months. Gampel's extensive study is essential for scholars and graduate students of medieval Iberian and Jewish history |

Gampel New York Cambridge University Press 2016 1 online resource (xii, 378 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 27 Oct 2016) Introduction: As if the Jews had no Lord. Part I. The things as they happened -- Prologue: The Kingdom of Castile. Chapter 1. The city of Valencia -- Chapter 2. The Kingdom of Valencia -- Chapter 3. The Island of Majorca -- Chapter 4. Barcelona -- Chapter 5. Girona -- Chapter 6. Elsewhere in Catalonia -- Chapter 7. The Kingdom of Aragon -- Epilogue: Part 1 -- Part 2. Unless the Lord watches over the city -- Chapter 1. King Joan -- Chapter 2. Queen Lolant -- Chapter 3. Duke Martí (and the Duchess Maria) The most devastating attacks against the Jews of medieval Christian Europe took place during the riots that erupted, in 1391 and 1392, in the lands of Castile and Aragon. Gampel's extensive study is essential for scholars and graduate students of medieval Iberian and Jewish history Geschichte 1391-1392 gnd rswk-swf Antisemitismus Geschichte Juden Jews / Spain / Aragon / History / 14th century Antisemitism / Spain / Aragon / History / 14th century Pogrom (DE-588)4137649-3 gnd rswk-swf Antisemitismus (DE-588)4002333-3 gnd rswk-swf Unruhen (DE-588)4136263-9 gnd rswk-swf Judenverfolgung (DE-588)4028814-6 gnd rswk-swf Spanien Aragon (Spain) / Ethnic relations / History / 14th century Aragon (Spain) / History / 14th century Aragonien (DE-588)4068794-6 gnd rswk-swf Aragonien (DE-588)4068794-6 g Antisemitismus (DE-588)4002333-3 s Unruhen (DE-588)4136263-9 s Pogrom (DE-588)4137649-3 s Geschichte 1391-1392 z 1\p DE-604 Judenverfolgung (DE-588)4028814-6 s 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-16451-2 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-316-61639-0 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781316690970 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
