Zusammenfassung: | In the long and often disastrous history of British entanglement in Afghanistan, the name of Alexander Burnes (1805–41) deserves to be remembered. Aged sixteen, he went to India to take up a post in the army, and speedily learned both Hindustani and Persian. His skills led him to political work, and he himself proposed a covert expedition to Bukhara, to survey the country and to observe the expansionist activities of the Russians in central Asia. (Burnes' 1834 account of this journey is also reissued in this series.) In 1836, he was sent to Kabul, and became involved in the British plan to replace Dost Muhammad Khan with Shah Shuja (which he personally thought a mistake). The British became a focus of increasing local discontent, and in November 1841 Burnes was murdered in Kabul by a mob. This account of his stay in the city was published posthumously in 1842 |

Travel and Exploration in Asia Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) In the long and often disastrous history of British entanglement in Afghanistan, the name of Alexander Burnes (1805–41) deserves to be remembered. This account of his stay in the city was published posthumously in 1842 Geschichte 1836 gnd rswk-swf Reise (DE-588)4049275-8 gnd rswk-swf Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 gnd rswk-swf Landeskunde (DE-588)4073972-7 gnd rswk-swf Afghanistan Motiv (DE-588)4133366-4 gnd rswk-swf Kunst (DE-588)4114333-4 gnd rswk-swf Indien Motiv (DE-588)4133832-7 gnd rswk-swf Afghanistan (DE-588)4000687-6 gnd rswk-swf Kabul (DE-588)4029127-3 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4076645-7 Reisebericht gnd-content Kabul (DE-588)4029127-3 g Landeskunde (DE-588)4073972-7 s Kunst (DE-588)4114333-4 s Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 s Geschichte 1836 z 2\p DE-604 Reise (DE-588)4049275-8 s Indien Motiv (DE-588)4133832-7 s Afghanistan Motiv (DE-588)4133366-4 s 3\p DE-604 Afghanistan (DE-588)4000687-6 g 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-108-07537-4 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781107589315 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
