Summary
The publication entitled The Disintegration of Jewish Life: 167
Days of the Second Republic presents a chapter in Czechoslovak
history characterized by the destruction of national sovereignty,
a crisis of democracy, a decline in moral values, and the slow
fascistization of society. One distinctive feature of this period
is the persecution of the Jewish minority and its gradual dis-
placement from public life.
This collective monograph looks at the state of the Jewish
minority and the changes it experienced, and also at the reaction
of and stance taken by the majority. The focus is primarily on
this phenomenon’s representation in literature and the media.
Last but not least, the publication also explores the subject’s
sociocultural aspects.
Although it has been nearly eight decades since the events un-
der discussion, until recently the legacy of the Second Republic
was almost completely overlooked. This period, which despite
its brief duration seriously shook the Jewish minority’s faith in
majority society, is still awaiting an in-depth assessment. The
texts in this publication represent another attempt at contribut-
ing to this subject.
This collective monograph, which explores a period that in
retrospect presages the horrors of the Second World War and
the unprecedented events of the Holocaust, is more than just a
retrospective look at a distant era, but also acts as an important
reminder of the past at a time when nationalism and extreme
right-wing rhetoric are again on the rise.

Summary
BLANKA SOUKUPOVÁ
“The conflict between democracy and totalitarianism.”
Czech thinking during the Second Republic (Historical/
anthropological reflections on national identity during
a time of social crisis)
This chapter outlines the new political and socio-economic
situation in the Czechoslovak Republic after the Munich
Agreement (30 September 1938). The analysis focuses on
the impact of Munich on the Czech national character, and
the author attempts to demythologize certain notions which
remain widespread today. While certain Czech figures pu-
blicly interpreted Munich as a misfortune for the entire na-
tional collective (catastrophe, disaster), others emphasized
Czechoslovakia’s perceived betrayal by England and France
as a key factor. Similarly, opinions and viewpoints on Munich
diverged from one another: for the governing political party
(the National Unity Party) Munich meant the final verdict of
history for a small nation, a verdict caused by bad foreign
and ethnic policy. According to militant Catholics, it was cau-
sed by Czech atheism. The democratic public saw Munich as
a temporary historical aberration. The capitulation itself was
justified by democrats as an attempt to physically preserve the
Czech nation. The opposition communist propaganda rejected
Munich, seeing it as a consequence of betrayal by the Czech
bourgeoisie.
The days of Munich, marked by an escalation of high-min-
ded emotions and the personification of Homeland and Nation,
quickly gave way to a “conflict between democracy and tota-
litarianism”, party politics and personal egoism. The first to be
affected by the familiar dichotomy of “us versus them” and by
a strategy of appropriation were non-Czech refugees and Czech
Germans. Very soon however, these sentiments shifted towards
the Jews (first German Jews and Zionists, later assimilated
283
Rozpad židovského života
Czech Jews as well) and then towards democratically-minded
politicians and artists. The politics of “national selfishness”
were even taken up by liberal journalist Ferdinand Peroutka,
a staunch supporter of “the Castle” during the First Republic.
The schizophrenia of Czech thinking during the Second
Republic culminated in the construction of two historical nar-
ratives. While the democrats clung to the interpretation of his-
tory espoused by national historian František Palacký, a new
“healthy” spin on Czech history instead elevated the tradition
of St. Wenceslas, who was seen as a diplomat who had sa-
ved the Czech nation at the price of submitting to its power-
ful “German” neighbor. The revivalist tradition lost both its
European dimension and its original purpose, which had been to
define oneself in opposition to Germans. Now, Czech resilience
would ensure the nation’s survival. According to the non-de-
mocratic Czech right, the prototypical new politician was Adolf
Hitler, who was placed in opposition to former Czechoslovak
president Edvard Beneš, whom they deemed politically incom-
petent. We may conclude that Munich thus became a symbol of
national crisis, a crisis that primarily affected the intellectual
sphere, undermining and later destroying democratic values.

Catholicism and anti-Judaism in the Czech lands in the late
1930s and during the Second Czechoslovak Republic
In the post-Munich period, certain long-term trends emerged in
Czech politics and society that fostered anti-democratic forces,
mostly in conservative circles. First of all, Catholic circles re-
sponded to the new social situation resulting from the immense
sense of frustration and hopelessness, and tried to achieve the
supremacy of Catholic influence in compensation for their al-
leged oppression during the First Czechoslovak Republic. These
284
Summary
developments manifested themselves through the increased in-
fluence of the Catholic Church in political and social events and
in efforts at formulating a long-term philosophical foundation
for Czech statehood. As a result, the tradition of St. Wenceslas as
the nation’s patron saint increasingly acted as a natural cohesive
element for uniting the nation and as a new tradition for legitimiz-
ing the Second Republic. Another typical feature of the Second
Republic was the rapid growth of anti-Semitism, in particular in
Czech Catholic circles, who wanted to solve the Jewish problem
during the Second Republic primarily through the discriminative
elimination of the Jewish element from public and economic
life (for instance, by introducing a numerus clausus for Jewish
students and for certain professions such as doctors and lawyers)
and by restricting Jews’ civil rights and forcing them to emigrate.
Catholic anti-Semitism was motivated primarily by religious,
national-cultural and socio-economic factors, and not by racial
considerations. In my opinion, the era’s increase in anti-Semitism
is closely linked to the growing conservative Catholic movement,
particularly in the latter half of the 1930s. For this reason, my
study also explores examples of antidemocratic and nationalist
feelings prior to the Second Republic, which are related to the
growing anti-Jewish views among a part of Catholic society fol-
lowing the Munich Agreement.

Demi’s strange footprints
The paper looks at volume XXV of Jakub Demi’s Šlépěje
(Footprints), published in 1940. Šlépěje XXV includes the text
“Otokar Březina and the Jews,” in which Demi distances himself
from the “philosemitic discourse” and describes Otokar Březina
as a role model for Adolf Hitler. The paper places this volume into
the context of Demi’s other Šlépěje and Mé svědectví o Otokaru
285
Rozpad židovského života
Březinovi (My Testimony Concerning Otokar Březina), as well
as Demi’s publications in newspapers and journals during the
Second Czechoslovak Republic and the Protectorate. The main
goal of this paper is a reconstruction of the “textual threads”
between the aforementioned central text “Otokar Březina and
the Jews“ and contemporary anti-Semitic discourse, whose repre-
sentatives and argumentative strategies are presented in this text.
The paper shows the connection between the non-discursive
practices of Jewish exclusion as described and imagined by
Demi in his texts and the re-constructed discursive anti-Semit-
ic figures. Demi also disparaged the Jewish philosopher and
journalist Theodor Lessing, with whom he was in contact in the
1920s and who was murdered in 1933 while living in exile in
Czechoslovakia. Šlépěje and Demi’s other texts evoke diverse
reactions in the contemporary press, showing their importance
in contemporary discourse.

Milena Jesenská and the others. Engaged resistance against
anti-Semitism during the Second Republic
This study focuses on resistance to and opposition against an-
ti-Semitism during the Second Czechoslovak Republic, a state
that was the direct result of the Munich Agreement and was de-
pendent on the goodwill of the German Nazi government. The
Second Republic ended when Germany invaded and occupied
the Czech Lands on 15 March 1939. In October 1938, some
right-wing and Catholic journalists began attacking liberalism
and democracy, demanding the firing of Jewish officers, doc-
tors and lawyers, and calling for discriminatory action against
the Jews. Leftists and liberals tried to fight back. This study
concentrates on four personalities who were engaged in these
debates and controversies.
286
Summary
The first was Milena Jesenská (1896—1944), who is well
known for her correspondence and friendship with Franz
Kafka. Jesenská was an outstanding journalist who from 1937
to 1939 worked for the liberal periodical, Přítomnost. She fo-
cused in particular on the life of Jewish exiles in Austria and in
Czechoslovakia, comparing their situation with lynched black
Americans. Jesenská was active in the anti-Nazi resistance, was
arrested and later died in the Ravensbriick concentration camp.
Jaroslav Šimsa (1900—1945) was a Protestant left-oriented
intellectual. An organizer of the YMCA movement and edi-
tor of Křesťanská revue magazine, he warned against attacks
on the Jews and argued that anti-Semitism was incompatible
with Christianity. Šimsa fought in the resistance and died in the
Dachau concentration camp in February 1945, close to the end
of the war. Přemysl Pitter (1895—1976) is the only of the four
to survive WWII. As a pacifist, he didn’t fight in the resistance.
Nevertheless, he argued against Nazi and Czech anti-Semitism
in his articles in Sbratření revue. He also helped Jewish chil-
dren by hiding them in the orphanage home that he founded
and directed. After the War, he was named “Righteous Among
the Nations”, an honorific title used by the State of Israel for
non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews.
The fourth person was Jan Krejčí (1903—1941), today an
almost unknown Communist editor and publisher. After the
Czechoslovak Communist Party was outlawed, he wrote and
published the book Židovská otázka (The Jewish Question,
1939). It was a brave act defending the Jews and attacking
anti-Semitism. Krejčí was involved in the anti-Nazi resistance.
In 1941, he was arrested and sentenced to death.
