SUMMARY
Kyrgyz monuments of the Middle Ages are known in the territory
of Minusinsk hollow, Tuva, Altai, Eastern Kazakhstan and Mongolia. At the
same time, the residence time of the Yenisei Kyrgyz in Altai is one of the least
developed issue in nomadology of Central Asia. This situation is determined
to the lack of the accumulated source base for in-depth study of the culture
of nomads in this region.
The monograph summarizes the main archaeological and written data
on the residence of the Kyrgyz in Altai in the context of ethnic and cultural
processes in Southern Siberia and Central Asia in the middle Ages. Unlike Tuva
and Khakassia, Kyrgyz residence in Altai didn’t have a large-scale character,
so the range of archaeological monuments is limited. Moreover, Kyrgyz Khagan
was never located in Altai. The object of the Kyrgyz found in different parts
of the mountains and foothills of Altai, which confirms the control of nomads
for this region. As a rule, within the bounds of the burial mounds of the Altai
there was found a Kyrgyz burial. In this regard, new archaeological materials
which were put into scientific circulation has a special significance particularly
those derived during the excavation of a series of burials of Kyrgyz culture in the
necropolis Chineta-II and one burial at the burial ground Korgon-I in the
Western Altai.
At present time the available sources allow speak of the existence
of an Altai local variant of Yenisei Kyrgyz culture in South Siberia. For an Altai
local variant of the Yenisei Kyrgyz culture A.A. Tishkin and V.V. Gorbunov
(2005) developed Yakonur stage (in the second half of IX - first half
of X century) and Ak-Tash stage (in the second half of X-XI century). These
stages are well synchronized with periods of other local variants of Yenisei
Kyrgyz culture in Tuva and Minusinsk.
An important dimension of the considered problem is the socio-political
organization of the nomads. The book presents an extensive historiographical
study of this issue, as well as certain social reconstruction on the basis
of the Altai materials. Military and hierarchical organization of society was typi-
cal for Kyrgyz. This fact can be verified by written sources and correlation
of accompanying equipment with the features of burial constructions.
In the majority of Kyrgyz burials in the Altai a variety of items of arms,
which confirms the military status of the dead was found. For further research
it’s necessary to summarize all the corpus of archaeological materials

on the history of the Kyrgyz people in southern Siberia and Central Asia,
including a greater number of the methods of the natural sciences.
Comprehensive analysis of the burial rite and inventory will allow reaching
a new level of the research of social organization of nomads, identifying elite
military burial grounds, as well as considering the influence of the Kyrgyz
cultural tradition on other people. In this case, a spectral analysis of metal
products, including precious metals has some perspectives.
Further study of the Turkic-speaking nomads remains an important di-
mension in science. In our view, the most appropriate term to characterize
the religious system of the Kyrgyz, as well as other Turkic-speaking peoples
of Southern Siberia and Central Asia, the middle Ages, is tengrizm. At the same
time, Tengrizm is a syncretic system, where shamanism is one of the components.
On the other hand, the spreading of proselyte religions in Central Asia -
Buddhism, Manichaeism, Nestorianism were reflected in the religious life
of the Turkic peoples, Kyrgyz, Uyghurs, leading to the formation of syncretic
concepts, practices and influencing art. In this case, a special role in the success
of the spreading of a particular religion belonged not to the missionaries, but
to the position of the military and political elite who patronized the new religious
worldview.
Despite the spreading of confessions and the using of religion in political
purposes, none of prozelyte religions was able to take a strong position
in the worldview of nomads, including Kyrgyz. Morphological, stylistic
and semantic interpretation of the toreutics items made, in Buddhist-Manichaean
style is the important dimension for further study of this aspect of the problem. |
