Zusammenfassung: | Pathologies of Power uses harrowing stories of life--and death--in extreme situations to interrogate our understanding of human rights. Paul Farmer, a physician and anthropologist with twenty years of experience working in Haiti, Peru, and Russia, argues that promoting the social and economic rights of the world's poor is the most important human rights struggle of our times. With passionate eyewitness accounts from the prisons of Russia and the beleaguered villages of Haiti and Chiapas, this book links the lived experiences of individual victims to a broader analysis of structural violence. Farmer challenges conventional thinking within human rights circles and exposes the relationships between political and economic injustice, on one hand, and the suffering and illness of the powerless, on the other. Farmer shows that the same social forces that give rise to epidemic diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis also sculpt risk for human rights violations. He illustrates the ways that racism and gender inequality in the United States are embodied as disease and death. Yet this book is far from a hopeless inventory of abuse. Farmer's disturbing examples are linked to a guarded optimism that new medical and social technologies will develop in tandem with a more informed sense of social justice. Otherwise, he concludes, we will be guilty of managing social inequality rather than addressing structural violence. Farmer's urgent plea to think about human rights in the context of global public health and to consider critical issues of quality and access for the world's poor should be of fundamental concern to a world characterized by the bizarre proximity of surfeit and suffering |

Paul Farmer, a physician and anthropologist with twenty years of experience studying diseases in Haiti, Peru, and Russia, argues that promoting the social and economic rights of the world’s poor is the most important human rights struggle of our times. A thoughtful memoir with passionate eyewitness accounts from the prisons of Russia and the beleaguered villages of Haiti and Chiapas, this book links the lived experiences of individual victims to a broader analysis of structural violence. Farmer challenges conventional thinking within human rights circles and exposes the relationships between political and economic injustice, on one hand, and the suffering and illness of the powerless, on the other. Pathologies of Power uses harrowing stories of life--and death--in extreme situations to interrogate our understanding of human rights. Farmer's urgent plea to think about human rights in the context of global public health and to consider critical issues of quality and access for the world's poor should be of fundamental concern to a world characterized by the bizarre proximity of surfeit and suffering Social stratification Equality Poor / Medical care Discrimination in medical care Right to health Human rights Health Services Accessibility Communicable Disease Control Human Rights Socioeconomic Factors Vulnerable Populations Stratification sociale Égalité (Sociologie) Pauvres / Soins médicaux Discrimination dans les soins médicaux Droit à la santé Droits de l'homme (Droit international) Discrimination in medical care fast Equality fast Human rights fast Poor / Medical care fast Right to health fast Social stratification fast Sociale ongelijkheid gtt Gezondheidszorg gtt Mensenrechten gtt Antropologia médica larpcal Saúde (aspectos sociais) larpcal Gesundheitswesen Menschenrecht Gesundheit (DE-588)4020754-7 gnd rswk-swf Epidemie (DE-588)4137380-7 gnd rswk-swf Menschenrecht (DE-588)4074725-6 gnd rswk-swf Soziale Schichtung (DE-588)4077574-4 gnd rswk-swf Armut (DE-588)4002963-3 gnd rswk-swf Strukturelle Gewalt (DE-588)4058132-9 gnd rswk-swf Medizinische Versorgung (DE-588)4038270-9 gnd rswk-swf Diskriminierung (DE-588)4012472-1 gnd rswk-swf Soziales Grundrecht (DE-588)4181928-7 gnd rswk-swf Medizinische Versorgung (DE-588)4038270-9 s Epidemie (DE-588)4137380-7 s Armut (DE-588)4002963-3 s Gesundheit (DE-588)4020754-7 s Menschenrecht (DE-588)4074725-6 s DE-604 Strukturelle Gewalt (DE-588)4058132-9 s Soziales Grundrecht (DE-588)4181928-7 s 1\p DE-604 Soziale Schichtung (DE-588)4077574-4 s Diskriminierung (DE-588)4012472-1 s 2\p DE-604 California series in public anthropology 4 (DE-604)BV014549962 4 Digitalisierung UB Regensburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=029280348&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis Digitalisierung UB Regensburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=029280348&sequence=000002&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Klappentext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
