Summary
This photographed edition of the first publications of the poem Metai (The Seasons) (Das Jahr, 1818)
and the fables (1824) by the father of Lithuanian literature, Kristijonas Donelaitis, has been prepared
in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of his birth. In the collection of fables, all the texts are in
Lithuanian, and in the edition of Metai, approximately 12 percent of the contents accompany German
texts by Martin Ludwig Rhesa (Martynas Liudvikas Rėza); earlier translations of these texts have been
thoroughly updated and supplemented with scholarly commentaries. The publication also contains other
authentic sources revealing the cultural՝historical circumstances of the first editions of Donelaitis s works
(reviews, private and public letters, etc.). Rhesa s creative contribution is analysed in various aspects in the
articles prepared by a group of authors.
In her article Martynas Liudvikas Rėza - pirmasis Kristijono Donelaičio kūrybos publikuotojas”
( Martin Ludwig Rhesa: The First Publisher of Kristijonas Donelaitis s Work”) Liucija Citavičiūtė
introduces the poet s biography supplemented by archival sources, specifies the historical circumstances
of the publication of the work, and reviews the basic facts and phenomena of early Lithuanian writings
and their possible influence on Donelaitis s works. In his overview of the poet s work Rhesa mentioned
some manuscripts that did not survive (church hymns, literary letters, and poems in five languages), but
was not aware of the existence of a work consisting of 659 hexameter lines, which was mentioned in the
treatise Entwurf einer preußischen Litterärgeschichte (A History of Prussian Literature) by Georg Christoph
Pisanski. The author of the article seeks to reconstruct the history of this manuscript. The research leads
to a conclusion that Donelaitis took it to Königsberg in 1757; the unidentified reviewers who gave it
favourable reviews actually were famous scholars and writers - professors Friedrich Samuel Bock, Theodor
Christoph Liliethal and Pisanski himself. This fact contradicts the opinion (shared by Rhesa as well) that
Donelaitis wrote exclusively “for himself”. In another subchapter the author introduces Rhesa s activity
publishing Lithuanian works. Only the publications of Donelaitis s works and the collection of Dainos
(Songs) bear Rhesa s signature; however, his statements in public and private letters and in the foreword to
the work reveal that he was planning to publish an entire series of Lithuanian works, and the manuscripts
that have survived in his personal archive allow for the supposition that he was the anonymous editor
of the published works by Christoph Hassenstein and Christian Gottlieb Mielcke. Several Prussian
military songs - original and in translation - testify that Rhesa was gathering material for a collection
of Lithuanian patriotic songs. The author of the article appraises Rhesa’s contribution to preparing
Donelaitis s poem for printing, and corrects some inaccuracies of presenting the poet’s biography and
analysing his work, which were found in “Vorbericht” (“Foreword”) and were uncritically repeated in later
publications. Extensive professional and philological commentaries (Anmerkungen) to the work, which may

have become the basis for a more thorough study, are assessed. A new interpretation of the first lines of the
dedication to Wilhelm von Humboldt (the poetic translation is revised by Regina Koženiauskienė) reveals
Rhesa’s allusion to the tradition of classical antiquity: Donelaitis is crowned with a wreath of green rue.
In the subchapter “Metų recenzijos” (“Reviews oi Metai ), the author discusses the reviews that appeared
in Königsberg, Weimar, Jena, Gottingen and Leipzig in 1818-1820, makes an attempt to establish the
identity of anonymous reviewers, and analyses Jacob Grimm’s manuscript inscriptions in the donation
copy of Metai made at the time of preparing a review. The reviewers called the work mature and original,
and offered interesting observations about the Lithuanian nation and language. They acclaimed Rhesa’s
foreword and commentaries, but criticised his poetic translation into the German language. In 1828,
the poem Metai, which was brought to fame by Rhesa, was included in Christian Gottlob Kayser s book
catalogue published in Leipzig and became more widely known.
Rhesa’s other works - the editing of the poem, its German translation, and the translations of the fables
from German and Greek - were analysed and assessed by other authors.
In Daiva Krištopaitienė’s study “Pirmasis Metų leidimas: redakcinės pataisos” (“The First Edition of
Metai: Editorial Revisions”), Rhesa’s edit of Donelaitis’s work is reviewed from the viewpoints of history
and textual scholarship. Looking from a historical viewpoint, the reader is reminded that in the early
19th century, the protection of the human dignity of common people was highly relevant for Lithuanian
literature. While understanding that his edition introduced Donelaitis to the world, Rhesa wanted to show
in the most positive light not the poem itself, but the Lithuanian nation represented in the poem, and to
protect it from accusations of barbarity. Guided by this purpose, he mercilessly cut all the lines in Metai that
did not correspond to the picture of a Lithuanian peasant as he imagined it. However, numerous omissions
disrupted the composition of the poem, made the portraits of the characters less vivid and distanced Rhesa’s
edition from the original. Besides, Rhesa also edited Donelaitis’s language - phonetics, morphology, syntax
and, above all, lexis (he changed personal names and other words with the aim of purifying the language,
removed German borrowings and edited the very idea of the text). The author arrives at the conclusion that
in comparison with the original, the text presented in the first edition of Metai is considerably changed, and
thus from the viewpoint of textual scholarship cannot be considered reliable and valuable.
In her article “Pirmasis Metų vertimas į vokiečių kalbą XIX a. vertimo teorijos ir praktikos kontekste”
(“The First Translation of Metai into German in the Context of the Theory and Practice of Translation of 19th
century”), Lina Plaušinaitytė analyses Rhesa’s poetic translation into German, which has been criticised for
its allegedly substandard quality, but in fact has not been assessed in the aspect of translation technique.
According to Albinas Jovaišas, the translation of Metai was made following Johann Gottfried Herder’s
principles of translating folk songs, according to which a translator’s basic goal is to convey the general
tone of the work. An overview of the discussion of translation of the late 18th to early 19th century shows
that translation of classical literature held strong positions in German literature. It was fundamentally
influenced by the translations of the Iliad and Odyssey by Johann Heinrich Voß, which had started being
considered the models of translation of classical works. New works were written in hexameter as well
(Hermann and Dorothea by Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Luise by Voß). Thus, it is more likely that Metai,
which, as newer research of the genre and poetics of the work in Lithuania and abroad shows, falls into
the sphere of influence of classical poetry, had to be translated referring to the translation principles
applied for works of classical form rather than the principles of translating folklore texts formulated by
Herder. The principles of translation expounded in Rhesa’s introduction to the edition of Metai confirm
that the author was familiar with the basic points of the discussion of translation of his time, and at
least theoretically agreed with the idea that a translation should be faithful to the original. Thus, at least
m RASIAI IV

theoretically, Rhesa claimed that he would seek a close translation even if he had to violate the rules of the
language for that purpose. Research showed that Rhesa only partially managed to realise these goals. In
addition to his preference to soften the rougher edges in the text of Metai, he also tended to replace words
and their combinations with more abstract ones and to use words and constructions of the higher register
of written language. As the analysis of syntax and some aspects of lexis reveal, his translation does indeed
contain some digressions from the rules of German grammar, which at that time were already codified in
the generally acclaimed works by Johann Christoph Adelung. The analysis of syntactic constructions shows
that Rhesa often ignored the requirement about the position of the predicate of a subordinate clause at
the end of the sentence, sometimes moved the predicate of the main clause from its customary position,
often moved adjective attributes with an article after the determinative, inserted other parts of speech
between the determinative and genitive attributes, and frequently used participial constructions. From
a lexical viewpoint his translation is distinguished by neologisms and the use of archaic words or words
typical of a higher poetic style. The question is raised in the article if Rhesa indeed sought to follow the
original text as closely as possible by disregarding the rules of standard grammar, coining neologisms and
choosing archaic lexis? An analysis showed that not all the digressions from standard German could be
explained by the influence of the Lithuanian language and by attempts to repeat the syntactic structures
or lexical units of the Lithuanian language. Quite often the presence of the features under discussion in
the German text seems unjustified in terms of the structure or meaning of the original. The same syntactic
and lexical features, which digress from the standard grammar, are characteristic of Voß’s translations
and works written in hexameter of that period. Therefore, one could reasonably assert that in his work
the first translator of Metai chose constructions which did not necessarily directly reflect one or another
feature of the Lithuanian text, but were typical of the general style of the works of that period. Rhesa
sought to produce a work that would not only convey the original text, but also contain stylistic features
characteristic of the translations of classical works and texts written in hexameter of that time, and in this
way would perhaps help him win deserved acclaim. However, Rhesa had a price to pay for his attempt to
adapt the translation of Metai to the requirements of the taste of the period: the use of more moderate
and abstract words of the written or poetic language deprived Metai of some of its vividness, and due to
unusual syntactic constructions typical of an elevated language or poetry, the poem acquired an artificial
and sometimes lofty sound and lost the natural quality characteristic of the language of the original.
In her article “Pirmoji lietuvių literatūros antologija” (“The First Anthology of Lithuanian Literature”),
Liucija Citavičiūtė presents the publication Aifópas arba Pá/akos (Aesop or Fables) edited by Rhesa (1824),
assesses the principles of compiling the booklet and its historical and lasting value, and compares it with
the Lithuanian book of fables Die Fabuln Aesopi (1706) published by Johann Schultz. In the anthology,
Donelaitis’s fables appear along with the fables by Aesop and German authors of later times, translated
by Rhesa from Greek and German. The editor did not explain the principles of text selection. He gave a
brief review of Donelaitis’s fables in the foreword to Metai, and edited them to a lesser extent than he did
the poem. Published for educational purposes and addressed to local readers, the booklet did not contain
either a German translation or commentaries. Rhesa’s educational foreword is one of very few known
Lithuanian texts by Rhesa. Compared with the translations of the fables, it is written in a more regular
language and has few German borrowings. Later publishers would include all Donelaitis’s works in single
editions, and that is why Rhesa’s first publication became a bibliographical rarity.
In her article “Martynas Liudvikas Rėza - Aisopo vertėjas” (“Rhesa, a Translator of Aesopus”), Dalia
Dilytė analyses Rhesa’s translations from Greek into Lithuanian. Rhesa should be considered the first
translator of secular literature from old Greek into Lithuanian. He published translations of 102 fables

by Aesop without indicating the source from which the translation was made. In those times scholarly
editions of Aesop’s works did not exist, and thus, the Greek text by Aesop that Rhesa chose for translation
into Lithuanian also contained some plots and remakes of later times. Like all the pioneers of translation,
Rhesa had to look for neologisms to describe the objects that did not exist in his environment. Thus, he
called a vineyard vyrikalnas (a wine hill), a mule - an asilarklys (a donkey horse), a bunch of grapes - vynkekė
(a wine cluster), etc. With the aim of making the text closer and more understandable to the readers
belonging to a different time and culture, Rhesa applied the principle of translation, which is today called
cultural adaptation. For example, he consistently replaced Zeus of Aesop’s fables with the god Perkūnas and
the waterbird loon with a swallow. Surprisingly, in Rhesa’s translations the majority of the fables do not
have morals. The moral is considered a necessary classical element of the fable. Perhaps Rhesa saw Aesop’s
morals as monotonous, dull or primitive, or perhaps he was convinced that people could understand the
idea of the fable without an additional explanation. While speaking about the relation of Rhesa’s fables
with the original text, it should be noted that he prefers the principle of free translation. Following this
principle, the translator often creates dialogue that is absent in the Greek text, and adds quite many details
or images of his own invention. It is contrary to the principle of the adequacy of style, as Aesop’s style
is very simple, dry and minimalistic, and the images in his fables have very few details, while Rhesa’s
translation is distinguished by a richer style. However, we should not reproach the translator for all these
features, as in his times the principles of translation were not established yet. Rhesa’s verbose translation
of the fables, which appeared in the early dawn of Lithuanian literature, is an important phenomenon in
the history of Lithuanian translation and an important contribution to Lithuanian literature.
The subject of research of Žavinta Sidabraitė’s article “Septynios Rėzos sudaryto pasakėčių rinkinio
Aifópas arba Pâfakos priede publikuotos pasakėčios” (“Seven Fables published in the Appendix of Rhesa’s
Collektion Aisop or Fables”) is seven fables in the collection of Lithuanian fables Aisopas arba Pasakos
translated from German by Rhesa. Three fables - “Lokys” (“The Bear ), “Atfkrėbinne kepure (“A Roll-
Up Hat”) and “Mellagis” (“The Telltale”) - are translations of Christian Fürchtegott Gellert’s fables “Der
Tanzbär”, “Die Geschichte von dem Hute”, and “Der Bauer und sein Sohn”. Geliert was one of the most
popular German poets of the mid֊18th century and probably the only German fabulist of that time, whose
works were translated into Lithuanian already by his contemporaries. All in all, translations of six fables
by Geliert are known today — in addition to those published in Rhesa’s collection, they are “The Thresher”
(“Der Drescher”) and “The Death of the Fly and the Mosquito” (“Der Tod der Fliege und der Mücke”)
translated by Christian Gottlieb Mielcke, and “The Traveller” (“Der Reisende”), possibly also translated
by Mielcke or Johann Friedrich Hertell. Two independent translations of Gellert’s fable “Der Bauer und
sein Sohn” are known today, of which one is a prose translation published in Rhesa’s collection, and the
other one is a poetic translation, whose manuscript is held at the Wróblewski Library of the Lithuanian
Academy of Sciences. The collection compiled by Rhesa also contains a translation of the fable “Father and
Three Sons” (“Der Vater und die drei Söhne”) by the 18th century fabulist Magnus Gottfried Lichtwer, who
is titled the German Lafontaine. The plots of the three remaining fables included in the annex to Rhesa’s
collection ֊ “Three Brothers”, “The Elder and His Son”, and “The Merchant” - are known from earlier times,
and are more or less widespread, but the sources of the translation are yet to be established. All the fables
published in the annex to Rhesa’s collection are translated in prose, and the translations are rather free and
sometimes reminiscent of a loose retelling of the plot.
The series of articles ends with Liucija Citavičiūtė’s research “Donelaičio kūrybos studijos Karaliaučiaus
universitete XIX a.” (“Studies of Donelaitis’s Work in Königsberg University in the 19th Century”). As
can be seen from the reports about the seminar of the Lithuanian language, which have survived in the
Hi . l RAŠTAI IV
586
archives, Rhesa began to analyse Donelaitis’s fables in the winter semester of 1825, and in 1830 included
the poem Metai in the curriculum. “The course in Donelaitis” was optional, and was open to students of
other faculties as well. Up to ten participants, Lithuanian and German, would attend the seminar; during a
semester one part (song) of the poem would be analysed, with emphasis placed on the grammar and lexis
of the colloquial language. In 1837, the consistory assessor August Kaehler admonished the university
curatorium by an official letter that literature and the language itself should not be studied at the seminar,
only the elementary knowledge which was necessary for communication with the parishioners should be
provided, education should be in German, and exclusively religious texts should be used for teaching; the
seminarists who were appointed to Lithuanian parishes were reproached for distancing themselves from
the German community. The readings of Donelaitis were not mentioned in later reports, but apparently
the studies did not stop. Friedrich Kurschat (Frydrichas Kuršaitis), who led the seminar after Rhesa’s death
(1840), analysed Donelaitis’s work in a new course in the colloquial Lithuanian language. Some students
(Wieszkalnys and others) tried to perform analytical research on Donelaitis’s work. Kurschat continued to
teach this course until his death (1883), referring to the edition of Georg Heinrich Ferdinand Nesselmann
(1869) rather than that of Rhesa. Neither the abstracts of lectures of the seminar’s teachers, nor the
students’ notes have been found.
