Out of History interrogates the boundaries of History as a discipline and offers
a critique of nationalist narratives. The chapters explore the limits of historical
representations, providing innovative ways to rethink memory, the archive,
creative writing, disciplinary methodologies and the legacies of colonialism.
Written by leading scholars in the fields of visual history; public history;
heritage; linguistics; oral history; and postcolonial studies, the authors also
address critical questions concerning the production of academic knowledge
and the status and future of the Humanities in the post-apartheid South Africa.
The chapters productively direct attention to the ebbs and flows of epistemo-
logical restlessness on historiography s contested littorals, post-1994. This is
a timely shift of perspective in the face of current concerns about the (un-
settled nature of the past that is South Africa s contemporary inheritance.
