and film became a focus of intense academic debate
in the 1 980s and 1 990s. Todav, w ith the passing oi
the evewitness generation and the rise of compar-
ative genocide studies, the Holocaust’s privileged
place not onlv in scholarly discourse hut across
Western society has been c all eel into question.
Probing the Ethics of Elolocciust Culture is a search-
ing reappraisal of the dehates and controversies
that have shaped Holocaust studies over a quarter
century. This landmark volume brings internation-
al scholars of the founding generation of Holocaust
studies into conversation vv ith a new generation
of historians, artists, and writers who have chal-
lenged the limits of representation through their
scholarlv and cultural practices. Focusing on the
public memorial cultures, testimonial narratives,
and artifacts of cultural memory and historv gen-
erated bv Holocaust remembrance, the volume՝
examines how՜ Holocaust culture has become insti-
tutionalised, globalised, and variously contested.
Organized around three interlocking themes- th e
stakes of narrative, the remediation of the archive,
and the politics of exceptionality----the essay s in
this volume explore the conip lex ethics surround-
ing the discourses, artifacts, and institutions of
Holocaust remembrance.
From contrasting viewpoints and, in particular,
from the multiple perspectives of genocide stud-

It brings together academics of the eyewitness generation with a new generation of academics, authors, and artists who have challenged the "limits of representation" through their scholarly and cultural practices. These practices span the analogic media of history, literature, and film as well as the nonanalogic world of architecture, digital archives, and geographic information systems. Organized around three interlocking themes...the stakes of narrative, the remediation of the archive, and the politics of exceptionality...the purpose of the book is to investigate the complex question of ethics at the heart of global Holocaust culture and, more broadly, genocide remembrance. Explicitly building upon the debates of the 1990s encapsulated in Probing the Limits of Representation, the present volume probes the ethics of Holocaust culture by focusing on the public memorial cultures, institutional formations, and artifacts of cultural memory and history generated by Holocaust remembrance.
