Lutz Röhrich (.1922-2006) was without
doubt one of the most distinguished German
folklorists of the twentieth century, whose
publications in the field of folk narrative
research are recognized as invaluable contri-
butions throughout the world. He studied
German, History, Latin, and Music at the
University of Tübingen, completing his stud-
ies with a dissertation on Die dämonischen
Gestalten der schwäbischen Volks Überliefer-
ung (1950). From 1950 until 1967 Lutz
Röhrich taught at the German Institute at the
University of Mainz. From there he moved
on. to the University of Freiburg, where he
turned the institute of Folklore into a center of folklore studies until, his
retirement. There he founded the “Freiburger Schule 5 of folk narrative
research, emphasizing the comparative study of fairy tales, legends, folk
songs, jokes, proverbs, proverbial expressions, and other so-called simple
forms. His numerous books belong to the standard works of German and
international folkloristics, among them:
Märchen und Wirklichkeit (1.954, in English as Folktales and Reality,
1991), Erzählungen des späten Mittelalters und ihr Weiterleben in Lite-
ratur und Volksdichtung bis zur Gegenwart (1.962/67), Deutsche Volks-
lieder Texte und Melodien (1965/67, with R.W. Brednich), Sage (1966),
Gebärde-Metapher-Parodie, Studien zur Sprache und Volksdichtung
(1967), Adam und Eva. Das erste Menschenpaar in Volkskunst und
Volksdichtung (1968), Handbuch des Volksliedes (1973/75, with R.W.
Brednich and W. Suppan), Lexikon der sprichwörtlichen Redensarten
(1973), Probleme der Sagenforschung (1973), Töpferei im Elsaß((1975,
