In tbc /ріж of Var/ovian уоащ con/crvati/ա Attract he volume “W kręgu mlodohonserwatyzmu warszawskiego” (In the sphere of Varsovian young conservatism) is a product of the academic conference held in Sopot in May 2014 titled „Młodokonserwatyzm warszawski w kulturze polskiej 1876-1939” (Varsovian young con servatism in the Polish culture of 1876 to 1939). The authors of the articles succeeded in characterizing the ideational profiles of the two most impor tant press bodies operating within this environment: the “Niwa” and the “Słowo”. The “Niwa”, to which Maciej Gloger devoted his study, worked hand in hand with the leading representatives of the conservative thought of those days, fellow men such as Ludwik Górski of the older generation, as well as Aleksander Rembowski, member of the Main School generation. It was on the pages of this magazine that the positivist and young-conserv ative environments interfused intensively. Indicating the sources of posi tivism and the attributes of the still-fledgling modern Polish conservatism became a target for Gloger. T Wiesław Ratajczak has successfully delineated the broad, geopolitical contexts of conservative journalism. His study has shown an extremely high, and by no means stereotyped, cultural and political awareness of the environment, con firmed no less through the publication of such an unanticipated text as Niemiecki turysta (the German tourist) originally by Aleksander Hercen. The question of the intricate connection between the best-known young-conservatist Henryk Sienkiewicz and the ideological attitude of the
environment around him was entertained by Tadeusz Bujnicki. H. Sienkiewicz, the author of the Tril ogy ֊ who enjoyed close ties with the papers “Niwa” and “Słowo” ֊ harbored a parallel aversion towards the activities of the Cracow conservatives; and his stint as associate of the radically positivist paper, the “Nowiny” is well-documented
Abstract. In the sphere of Varsovian young conservatism Ю in his biography. According to Bujnicki, Sienkiewicz did not so much attempt to steer a middle course between the most important magazines of the age ֊ with their contradictory ideas ֊ as try to arrive at a compromise, his inert skepticism preventing him from committing himself wholeheartedly to any one camp. The taking charge of the editorial office of the “Słowo” cannot be thus perceived explicitly as the twilight of the progressive period and the dawn of the conservative one. Marek Wedemann also examines the case of the alleged ideological coup in the intellectual biography of the editor of the “Słowo”. Following up on the vi cissitudes of the cooperation with the “Niwa”, he singles out the issue behind the defense of the legacy of Wincenty Pol against total criticism on the part of Włodzimierz Spasowicz. The deepening relations with the social environment of the “Niwa” point to, in Wedemann’s view, a desire to strive for a centrist, some what more conciliatory stance. The author of the study accurately reconstructs the presence of Zdanoborski’s motto “Break down rather than bend down” in the works of Sienkiewicz. This formula had surfaced earlier in the journalistic works of the writer ֊ for example, in the feature article of the “Gazeta Polska” dating back to 1873 ֊ and was, at first, by no means connected with the approval of the idea of uncompromising faithfulness. The author of the study means to convince that the changing attitude towards the issue of indomitability is a telling symp tom of the
ideological choices made by Sienkiewicz. This evolution proceeded from wariness, through the relative approval and nostalgia for what had passed, to affirmation. His idea of this very indomitability has its roots in the chivalrous past and remains valid in the 20th century, strongly shaping the attitudes of the generations to come in their quest to fight for Poland. One of the principal challengers to the author of the Trilogy in the field of histori cal novel writing was Teodor Jeske-Choiński, a fact which, today, is rarely remem bered about. However, Maciej Moszyński - the author of the study included in this book ֊ does not deal with fiction, which is most interesting in itself. Instead, he is preoccupied with the journalism of Jeske-Choiński, one that is marked by anti-Semitism. At the start of the eighteen eighties, the assimilative program of the positivists revealed its deficiencies or, perhaps, even its Utopian character. In these circumstances, Jan Jelenski created the weekly journal “Rola” in 1883, and invited Jeske-Choiński to join in the endeavour. The latter, on the other hand, set forth the tenets of modern conservatism assuming solidarity embedded in the cornerstones of religion and nationality. At the same time, he retained something from the legacy of positivism, namely the biologism and evolutionism in thinking about society. Upon becoming familiar with the Darwinian-like ideology of the author of “Żydzi na tulactwie” (Jews in exile), a peculiar textbook imbued with

In the sphere of Varsovian young conservatism anti-Semitism, it is hard to resist the impression that Jeske-Choiński - listed, in general, as a representative of the young-conservative environment - often places himself on the antipodes of the conservative worldview. However, the contemporary fiction ofJeske-Choiński has become part of the con servative context. Cezary Zalewski devotes his study to one of Jeske-Choiński’s novels entitled “W pętach wolnej miłości” (In the tethers offree love) written in 1913. He makes an attempt to read this schematic romance novel - based on a melodramatic theme - in the broad context of worldview disputes. He exposes, with great attention to detail, those facets of the literary work in question which concern the colliding of the intimate with the public sphere, a game of instincts, the art of seduction, as well as the tradition-oriented institutions of marriage and family. In the thus-interpreted novel byJeske-Choiński, the family and patriotic ethea are shown to be closely tied; whereas contemporary, anti-conventional ide ologies pose a threat to both. An assessment of the issue of the ideological turning points ֊ present in the portrayals of Sienkiewicz and Jeske-Choiński - is undertaken also by Michał Rogalski, the author of the study of the writings of Ignacy Charszewski, a clergy man. The biography of this cleric - columnist and associate, among others, of the “Słowo” and the “Niwa”, as well as theologian ֊ has been molded into a schematic model, in which the transition from a position leaning initially towards
Catholic modernism to one that becomes explicitly anti-modernist plays the essential role. Rogalski negatively confirmed this view, subjecting the very abundant journalistic legacy of Charszewski to interpretation, as well as studying his hitherto unpub lished daily journals. Likewise, Mariaj. Olszewska took up the issue of the attitude of the conserva tives to the revolution of 1905 - previously raised in Rogalski’s study - in her re search of the drama written by Adam Krechowiecki in 1907 entitled “My”. Earlier, Krechowiecki had launched his criticism of the revolution as not being a random event, but rather a vivid symptom of modernity. The trivial and melodramatic plot served the author to settle, once and for all, the matter of the true ideology behind the revolution and clear its, until then, dubious anthropology. The volume marks the conclusion of the study by Marek Pąkciński who casts a spotlight on the collision of the young-conservative thought with currents that emerged in the age of Young Poland. With remarkable thoroughness, he portrays the most important dilemmas of the conservative thought connected with change, revolution and the practical impossibility of maintaining a conserv ative outlook. The author emphasizes that the conservatives had, on numerous occasions, realized the secondary nature of their own worldview towards “pro-

Therefore, with the passing of time, they were often led to abandon the mental concepts they had earlier subscribed to for the sake of either nationalism or liberalism. The conservatives, however anachronistic they may appear to be, turn out to be astute diagnosticians of the modern society. The article by Marek Pąkciński does not so much sum up his reflections on the legacy of the young conservatives, as mark a new direction of thought regarding this important aspect of tradition. This is what represents the fitting crowning of a volume; one which reveals, in part, history at a crucial stage of Polish thought, thus providing a simultaneous incentive for further study.
