in Essien is a foremost indigenous Professor of Linguistics
in the south-south and south-east of Nigeria. He has taught in
many universities in and outside Nigeria He is currently on
contract assignment at the University of Uyo, after retiring from the
University of Calabar. Professor Essien has published widely in national
and international journals in almost all aspects of linguistics. His
contributions towards the linguistic revival of the minority languages of
Nigeria are unprecedented.
This book is a compressed version of some commissioned and inspired
works on vital aspects of linguistics by the doyen of African linguistics
himself. It is a must read for anybody interested in issues concerning
language endangerment, linguistic revival of the vanishing tongues of
Africa, language and ethnicity, language and power, language and
politics, etc. I am indeed glad to be associated with the history of the
making of this book.
