Stanisław Pawłowski (1882-1940) Summary tanisław Pawłowski was born on 16 March 1882 at Dembowiec near Jasło as a son of Józef, an itinerant salesman of textiles, and Apolonia, née Watulewicz. In the years 1894-1900 he attended secondary school at Sambor, from which he was ex pelled for being a member of a secret pupil organisation. Next he learned at Jasio, where he took his graduation exam in 1902. The period of university studies in Vien na (1902-1903) and Lvov (1903-1906) was undoubtedly one when his scientific interests had crystallised. In Vienna Pawłowski attended lectures given by such emi nent scholars as Penck, Hann, Oberhummer and Sues, whose influence can be traced in his later research work. At the University of Lvov he studied history under Bronislaw Dembiński for two years, and then geography and geology under Antoni Rehman and Eugeniusz Romer. Romer’s influence, their common field trips, finally decided about Pawlowski’s research profile. But the historical education he had ac quired may have greatly influenced the geographical fields he studied. Stanisław Pawlowski’s professional career included work at school and various universities. The work at school gave him a great sense of responsibility for teaching geography and making use of its cognitive and educational values. In the years 19061908 he taught at a secondary school in Stanisławów, and then in Secondary School no. 7 in Lvov (1908-1909). The next years saw him working as an academic teacher from 1 November 1909 to 31 August 1919 at the Trade Academy in Lvov, where he gave lectures in trade
geography and the history of trade. In 1914 he married Ewa Wanda Topór-Kamińska, a teacher. Their two children: Wanda (born 1915) and Przemysław (born 1921) died in 1942 at Auschwitz. The youngest, Zbigniew (bom 1926), became professor at the Medical Academy in Poznań. Pawlowski’s academic co-operation with Romer helped him to develop and im prove his research technique. In November 1910 he was granted a Ph.D. degree in geography and geology at the University of Lvov on the basis of a dissertation on Temperature of flowing water in Galicia. He obtained his post-doctoral degree (,habilitacja) on 9 June 1913 on the presentation of a work River ice phenology of the 5 ~ 191 ~
upper Vistula, upper Dniester and their tributaries. From 1913 till the end of his stay in Lvov Pawłowski was a privat dozent in the University’s Philosophical Faculty. At the same time, in the years 1913-1918, he was a dozent in the city’s Higher Forest ry School and conducted lectures in the Economic Seminary at Snopków near Lvov. The Lvov period was one of his intense scientific, organisational and social activity. It was then that he wrote a synthetic work Geography of Poland (1917), which demonstrates the author’s superior scientific and didactic qualities. An important event in Pawlowski’s scholarly biography was obtaining the title of extraordinary professor in geography at the University of Lvov on 11 September 1918. A decisive date in his life and activity was 1 April 1919, when he was appointed professor at Poznań University. Thus started the Poznań period of Prof. Pawlowski’s activity, a period of his in tensive scientific, didactic and organisational work. It was characterised by a wide range of scientific interests, great challenges of an organisational nature, and con stant concern for the development of the Poznań geographical centre, which he or ganised and developed systematically. Prof. Pawłowski was one of the organisers of the Philosophical Faculty at Poznań University, he established the Chair of Geogra phy and later the Geographical Institute. He was appointed ordinary professor on 1 October 1921. He took great care to ensure Poznań geography all-round develop ment, as shown by the establishment in 1924 of another geographical chair, that of
Economic Geography, the direction of which was given to Prof. Stanislaw No wakowski. What corroborates Prof. Pawlowski’s hard work and wide-ranging scientific interests is his output, which embraces some 350 monographic works, articles, man uals, and reviews. Worth emphasising is the fact that he dealt with both physical geography and, very successfully, human geography. What interested him in physical geography were primarily issues in geomorphology, mainly glacial geomorphology, as well as hydrography and climatology. His Carpathian studies, especially those concerning glacial geomorphology, and later studies in North-Western Poland brought about many syntheses. Worth noting is the synthesis of the glaciation of the Carpathians prepared for the 1934 Interna tional Geographical Congress in Warsaw. While fascinated with mountain studies, which he continued in the Poznań period during summer vacations, Prof. Pawłowski also saw the need to conduct detailed research on the coast. He presented its results in 1922 in a broad synthesis characterising the morphology of the Polish coast. What greatly contributed to the development of regional studies was Kozierowski’s Atlas of the geographical names of western Slavonic lands, for which Prof. Pawłowski wrote an introduction and prepared many entries. He did not forget about eastern Poland, either; commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, from 1928 he carried out a geomorphological research in South Polesie. A very important line in Prof. Pawlowski’s research was an anthropogeographical one: he defined problems and research
methods in human geography. Worth noting are also issues in political and historical geography that he developed. ~ 192 ~
As has been emphasised, Prof. Pawłowski studied a variety of geographical prob lems, and this made him fully entitled to set methodological and methodical stand ards of geography as a science and directions of its development. Methodological aspects can be found in all his works, whether in geomorphology, anthropogeography, or regional geography. Prof. Pawłowski was of the opinion that the subject mat ter of geography was geographical space, the identification of substances and phe nomena in space, and the examination of links and relations among them. He popularised and developed Hettner’s conception of the landscape. He used the term ‘landscape’ interchangeably with that of ‘geographical environment’. He attached great weight to analytical studies and emphasised the importance of the empirical method in geographical research. He persisted in field studies, considering them to be a basic element of the geographer’s research work. Field discussions were an im portant part of the research conducted by the Professor and his pupils. His remarks concerning the use of laboratory experiment in the research process, especially the spatial scales of processes observed in the field and in the laboratory, have lost none of their relevance. Prof. Stanisław Pawłowski knew and understood well the needs of school geogra phy. The problem of school geography appeared in all his scholarly work. He was a defender of school geography and an excellent mediator where educational authori ties were involved. In his opinion, the teaching of geography ensured it its future development as a
scientific discipline. When discussing methodological issues, he clearly separated the science of processes from the science of geographical re gions. Prof. Pawlowski’s achievements in the publication of school manuals are great (՛Geography of Poland, 1917, Geography, volumes I-III, 1921). Seven reprints of his manuals are the best proof of their significance and value in school teaching. What teachers appreciated greatly were the methodological guidelines to geographical manuals he published. While deeply engaged in research work, Prof. Pawłowski also devoted much attention to organisational work and university teaching. He gave lectures in the framework of Public University Lectures and in the Agricultural-Forestry Faculty and the Political Economy Section of Poznań University. He was the first chairman of the Poznań Branch of the Polish Sightseeing Society set up in 1920, as well as president of the managing board of the Poznań District of the Marine and Colonial League. In order to ensure systematic studies of the Baltic coast, in 1922 the Marine Fishery Laboratory was established on his initiative in which he was deputy manager. An event of great importance for the popularisation of research results was the intro duction in 1926 of the Geographical Institute’s series Geographical Studies ofNorthWestern Poland, with Prof. Pawłowski as its editor. His interest in the status of geography as a school subject was organised and planned. He headed the All-Polish Convention of Geography Teachers in Łódź organ ised in June 1922. In 1923 he set up the Association of Polish
Geography Teachers, presenting its basic assumptions and being its head until the outbreak of the war. Together with Professors Romer and Czyżewski he published the Association’s peri odical, Geographical Journal. His next contribution to the integration of the corn- 193
munity of geographers was the organisation of the Poznań Geographical Society in 1925. In 1930, concerned about the education of geography teachers, Prof. Pawłowski together with Tarnawski, a Poznań inspector of secondary schools, organised the Didactics of Geography Department at the University, the first unit of this type in Poland. His objective was to raise the teaching of geography to a high level. But Prof. Pawlowski’s primary concern was the scientific development of the Poznań geographical centre. His frequent travels and broad academic contacts boosted the rank and importance of the output of Poznań geographers. In recogni tion of the position Prof. Pawłowski undoubtedly had among them, he was made secretary general to the Organisational Committee of the 14th International Geo graphical Congress, held in Warsaw on 21-31 August 1934. He was also the editor of the Congress publication, Actes du Congres. At the 15th International Geographical Congress in Amsterdam in 1938 (17-28 July) he was chosen vice-president of the International Geographical Union, replacing Prof. Romer in this function. Prof. Pawłowski was a member of many scientific societies at home and abroad, for exam ple since 1936 he was a member of the Polish Academy of Skills, and since 1923, vicechairman of the Poznań Society of the Fiends of Sciences. Prof. Pawłowski had the ability to collect co-workers, like Prof. Nowakowski, Dr Olszewicz, Dr Winid or Dr Czekalski, and pupils: Dylik, Galon, Dorywalski, Bajerlein, Czekańska, Kiełczowska, Krygowski, and Zajchowska, who influenced the level and
status of Polish geography also after the war. In the academic year 1927/28 Stanisław Pawłowski was the dean of the Mathe matical-Natural Faculty of Poznań University, and in the academic year 1932/33 he was the school’s rector. This meant that his management took place in a very difficult period. In the spring of 1933 Minister Jçdrzejewicz’s Academic Schools Act was passed that restricted the autonomy of universities. Its introduction was preceded by discussions among professors and great animation in the student circles that led to a strike on 3 March 1933 and two days’ suspension of classes. Still, as the rector stat ed in his report, „when we turned to the young people asking them to end the strike, they obeyed us and returned to their everyday concerns”. What demonstrates the level of emotions at that time was the disciplinary action taken against Prof. Antoni Jakubski because, „having no proof whatsoever, he insistently accuses the Academic Authorities: the Senate, and in particular the Rector and Vice-rector, of tolerating and supporting the strike action of the academic youth at the end of the 2nd tri mester of the academic year 1932-33” (Protocol of the PU Senate meeting held on 3 and 6 April 1933). The Act, among other things, abrogated the principle of non removal of a professor from a chair and liquidated the existing liberal forms of uni versity self-government. In solidarity with the opinion of the university community, Prof. Pawłowski spoke against the Act. As a form of protest, he resigned his function as rector. The academic Senate did not accept his
resignation and chose him rector again for the years 19ՅՅ-1935, but he did not accept the post, also for reasons of poor health. When still rector, Prof. Pawłowski set up the Scientific Fund of the Poznań University Senate to ensure a financial backup for the publication of scholars’ works. Prof. Pawłowski knew the University’s mechanism of operation well, as demonstrat~ 194 ~
ed by his report for the academie year 1932/33 in which he summed up the 15 years of the University’s activity and presented prospects of its further development. In the last days of August 1939 Prof. Pawłowski left for Jarosław nad Sanem to prepare the evacuation of Poznań University. It was because of his great scientific and organisational achievements as well as his fervent patriotism that as early as 14 October 1939 he was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned in Młyńska Street, and on 2 December transported to Fort VII in Poznań. He was executed by a firing squad on 6 January 1940 and probably buried in the graves in the Wielkopolski Na tional Park in the Wypalanki forestry district. Prof. Stanisław Pawłowski was a recognised academic authority who influenced the development of Polish geography in the internar period and was greatly involved in the organisation of science as well as university and school didactics. His pupils continued their Master’s work in the postwar period in most university centres in the country. As a pupil of Prof. Bogumił Krygowski (who was himself a pupil of Prof. Pawłowski and his successor in Poznań after the war), I could directly observe the fascination of Prof. Pawlowski’s pupils with his scientific output and personality. When I give lectures in the Śniadecki Room in the University’s Collegium Maius, I draw students’ attention to Prof. Pawlowski’s oil portrait (funded by his pupils) and to the memorial plaque in the Collegium Maius hall dedicated to Professor and Rec tor Stanisław Pawłowski. His memory is still vivid in the Poznań
geographical centre. Each year on 6 January the University rector together with representatives of the workers and students of Poznań geography put flowers in Fort VII in memory of this great scholar, educator and creator of the Poznań geographical centre, and rector of Poznań University.
