Conclusions : archaeology and the historic texts of both World Wars "Over the last 30 years, hydrographical marine surveys in the English Channel helped uncover the potential wreck sites of German submarines, or U-boats, sunk during the conflicts of World War I and World War II. Through a series of systemic dives, nautical archaeologist and historian Innes McCartney surveyed and recorded these wrecks, discovering that the distribution and number of wrecks conflicted with the published histories of U-boat losses. Of all the U-boat war losses in the Channel, McCartney found that some 41% were heretofore unaccounted for in the historical literature of World War I and World War II. This book reconciles these inaccuracies with the archaeological record by presenting case studies of a number of dives conducted in the English Channel. Using empirical evidence, this book investigates possible reasons historical inconsistencies persist and what Allied operational and intelligence-based processes caused them to occur in the first place. This book will be of interest to scholars and researchers in the fields of nautical archaeology and naval history, as well as wreck explorers"-- |

This book will be of interest to scholars and researchers in the fields of nautical archaeology and naval history, as well as wreck explorers"-- Geschichte Weltkrieg (1939-1945) Submarines (Ships) Germany History Excavations (Archaeology) English Channel World War, 1939-1945 Naval operations Submarine World War, 1939-1945 Naval operations, German World War, 1939-1945 Campaigns English Channel Shipwrecks English Channel Underwater archaeology English Channel Funde (DE-588)4071507-3 gnd rswk-swf Zweiter Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079167-1 gnd rswk-swf Erster Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079163-4 gnd rswk-swf Unterseeboot (DE-588)4078646-8 gnd rswk-swf Wrack (DE-588)4066981-6 gnd rswk-swf Unterwasserarchäologie (DE-588)4062041-4 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 g Erster Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079163-4 s Zweiter Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079167-1 s Unterseeboot (DE-588)4078646-8 s Wrack (DE-588)4066981-6 s Unterwasserarchäologie (DE-588)4062041-4 s Funde (DE-588)4071507-3 s DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-138-81435-6 Routledge studies in archaeology 16 (DE-604)BV044648085 16 https://doi.org/10.4324/9781315747545 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
