Democradura: Essays On Nigeria’s Limited Democracy is a collection of
articles penned by Professor Femi Mimiko, mni, over a 30-year period. The broad
theme is Nigeria’s tortuous attempts at building democracy and laying the basis
for nation-building and inclusive development, undertaken over the past 57 years
of the country’s relative political independence. Taken together, the 164 essays in
the book traverse diverse issue-areas, from education, through contestation for
power by a notoriously fractious ruling elite, to Nigeria’s tentative engagement
with the global system. While the narrative is largely conducted within the theo-
retical rubric of political economy, this is done in an easy-to-comprehend man-
ner, which makes Democradura a compelling addition to the rich corpus of
literature on the Nigeria project.
N. Oluwafemi Mimiko, PhD, mni, is currently a Professor of Political Science at
Obafenii Awolowo University (OAU), Nigeria. He was SSRC-Mac Arthur Founda-
tion Visiting Scholar, Watson Institute, Brown University, Providence, RI; Korean
Foundation Visiting Fellow, The Academy of Korean Studies, Seoul; and Senior
Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor, United States Military Academy (USMA),
West Point, NY. In 2004, Professor Mimiko was conferred with the ‘USMA Army
Commander’s Public Service Award.’ He is the author of Globalization: The Politics
of Global Economic Relations and International Business (2012), Carolina Academic
Press. Mimiko was Vice Chancellor, Adekunle Ajasin University, Nigeria, from 2010
to 2015; and Member of the National Institute (mni), Kuru, Nigeria. He was for
one year, January 2016 to January 2017, African and African-American Studies
Associate at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA. His most recent work is
Getting Our Universities Back On Track: Reflections and Governance Paradigms
From My Vice-Chancellorship (2017), published by Pan-African University Press in
the United States.
This book is part of the African World Series, edited by Toyin Falola, Jacob and
Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities, University of Texas at Austin.
