They pored over magazines that described the dangerous pleasures of corporal punishment. A few had sexual relationships with each other, exchanged rings and vows, willed each other property, and lived together in long-term partnerships described as marriages. But, as Sharon Marcus shows, these women were not seen as gender outlaws. Their desires were fanned by consumer culture and their friendships and unions were accepted and even encouraged by family, society, and church. Far from being sexless angels defined only by male desires, Victorian women openly enjoyed looking at and even dominating other women. Their friendships helped realize the ideal of companionate love between men and women celebrated by novels, and their unions influenced politicians and social thinkers to reform marriage law.--From publisher description |

Their friendships helped realize the ideal of companionate love between men and women celebrated by novels, and their unions influenced politicians and social thinkers to reform marriage law.--From publisher description Geschichte 1830-1900 gnd rswk-swf Femmes / Angleterre / Histoire Groupes de femmes / Angleterre Lesbiennes / Angleterre / Histoire Amitié féminine / Angleterre Femmes dans la littérature SOCIAL SCIENCE / Sociology / Marriage & Family bisacsh LITERARY CRITICISM / Gay & Lesbian bisacsh Female friendship fast Lesbians fast Women in literature fast Women fast Women / Social networks fast Vrouwen gtt Vriendschap gtt Seksualiteit gtt Huwelijk gtt Victoriaanse tijd gtt Kvinnor / historia / Storbritannien sao Kvinnor / sociala nätverk / historia / Storbritannien sao Lesbiska kvinnor / historia / Storbritannien sao Kvinnlig vänskap / Storbritannien sao Kvinnor i litteraturen sao Frau Geschichte Sexualität Women England History Women Social networks England Lesbians England History Female friendship England Women in literature Frauenfreundschaft (DE-588)4196112-2 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Frauenfreundschaft (DE-588)4196112-2 s Geschichte 1830-1900 z 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 0-691-12820-0 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-0-691-12820-7 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-691-12835-9 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-691-12835-1 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
