Description based on print version record "Stone monuments and objects are highly accessible today and formed a focus for engagement, transformation and re-use in the past. Stone is inextricably linked to ideas of monumentality and remembrance. It formed an active medium in the creation of identities and memory in a range of social contexts and practices, including the embodied, performative and incorporated practices of daily activities and traditions. It can be argued that the material presence and physical character of stone objects and monuments were not only actively harnessed in these encounters, but were also the very stuff from which social relations were derived, perceived and thought through. This volume explores the power and effect of stone through the meanings that emerged out of people's engagement and encounters with its physical properties. Focused primarily on the Neolithic and Bronze Age of Atlantic Europe it brings together authors working on the materiality (materialitas) of stone via stone objects, rock art, monuments and quarrying activity. This highlights the connections that cross-cut what are traditionally seen as disparate research areas within the archaeological discipline."--Back cover In English, with abstracts in French and German Megalith swd Materialität swd Antiquities fast Antiquities, Prehistoric fast Bronze age fast Megalithic monuments fast Neolithic period fast Sculpture, Prehistoric fast Stone implements fast HISTORY / Ancient / General bisacsh Funde Megalithic monuments Europe Congresses Sculpture, Prehistoric Europe Congresses Stone implements Europe Congresses Neolithic period Europe Congresses Bronze age Europe Congresses Antiquities, Prehistoric Europe Congresses Megalith (DE-588)4169266-4 gnd rswk-swf Materialität (DE-588)4512697-5 gnd rswk-swf Europa Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)1071861417 Konferenzschrift gnd-content Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 g Megalith (DE-588)4169266-4 s Materialität (DE-588)4512697-5 s 1\p DE-604 O'Connor, Blaze Sonstige (DE-588)140925546 oth Cooney, Gabriel Sonstige (DE-588)1024986586 oth Chapman, John 1951- Sonstige (DE-588)139278346 oth Humanities Institute of Ireland Sonstige oth Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe Materialitas 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
spellingShingle | Materialitas working stone, carving identity "Stone monuments and objects are highly accessible today and formed a focus for engagement, transformation and re-use in the past.
