Engineers and hydrologists praised the dam for its technical complexity and the skills required to construct what was then the world's fifth-largest mega-dam. Portuguese colonial officials cited benefits they expected from the dam--from expansion of irrigated farming and European settlement, to improved transportation throughout the Zambezi River Valley, to reduced flooding in this area of unpredictable rainfall. "The project, however, actually resulted in cascading layers of human displacement, violence, and environmental destruction. Its electricity benefited few Mozambicans, even after the former guerrillas of FRELIMO (Frente de Libertaça̋o de Moçambique) came to power; instead, it fed industrialization in apartheid South Africa." (Richard Roberts) This in-depth study of the region examines the dominant developmentalist narrative that has surrounded the dam, chronicles the continual violence that has accompanied its existence, and gives voice to previously unheard narratives of forced labor, displacement, and historical and contemporary life in the dam's shadow."--Publisher's website |

"The project, however, actually resulted in cascading layers of human displacement, violence, and environmental destruction. Its electricity benefited few Mozambicans, even after the former guerrillas of FRELIMO (Frente de Libertaça̋o de Moçambique) came to power; instead, it fed industrialization in apartheid South Africa." (Richard Roberts) This in-depth study of the region examines the dominant developmentalist narrative that has surrounded the dam, chronicles the continual violence that has accompanied its existence, and gives voice to previously unheard narratives of forced labor, displacement, and historical and contemporary life in the dam's shadow."--Publisher's website Geschichte 1965-2007 gnd rswk-swf HISTORY / Africa / South / General bisacsh BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Real Estate / General bisacsh Economic development projects fast Forced migration fast Rural conditions fast Wirtschaft Economic development projects Mozambique Forced migration Zambezi River Valley Umweltschaden (DE-588)4117286-3 gnd rswk-swf Umsiedlung (DE-588)4061614-9 gnd rswk-swf Energiewirtschaft (DE-588)4014743-5 gnd rswk-swf Umweltveränderung (DE-588)4304982-5 gnd rswk-swf Afrika Sambesi (DE-588)4105270-5 gnd rswk-swf Cabora-Bassa-Staudamm (DE-588)4492599-2 gnd rswk-swf Moçambique (DE-588)4039786-5 gnd rswk-swf Moçambique (DE-588)4039786-5 g Sambesi (DE-588)4105270-5 g Cabora-Bassa-Staudamm (DE-588)4492599-2 g Energiewirtschaft (DE-588)4014743-5 s Umsiedlung (DE-588)4061614-9 s Umweltveränderung (DE-588)4304982-5 s Umweltschaden (DE-588)4117286-3 s Geschichte 1965-2007 z 1\p DE-604 Isaacman, Barbara Sonstige oth 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
