THE HEROES WERE GOING, THEY WERE GOING
THE FIFTY-THIRD RESERVE INFANTRY REGIMENT
DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR
(1915-1918)
Summary
During the three year of its ex-
istence, the Fifty-third reserve
infantry regiment passes through the
main battlefields in the Balkans. If the
geographic borders of the peninsula
are to be formally observed then the
regiment even surpasses them. Its path
circles into its original trajectory from
Kyustendil and Radomir back to the
two settlements once again. In the end
of the beginning of the regiment’s way
is the settlement Belo pole and in the
beginning of the end of its way is the
settlement Dobro pole. The infantry
regiment’s battle path includes engage-
ments in battle in the west and in the
south, specifically in Vardarska Mac-
edonia - Golak, Kalimantzi, Zletovska,
Veles, Goleshnitza, Klepa, and Golas-
hetz. After a field stay near the village
Smokvitza, the infantry regiment is
moved towards the East, to positions in
Belasitza. In the summer the regiment
advances from the Rupel defile along
Struma and south towards the Aegean
Sea. However, it is quickly moved north
to Dobruja. In the new war against Ro-
mania, the regiment fights in the bat-
tles near Dobrich, Kubadin, Tashavlu,
Babadag and it marches into the last
town in Tulcha as a liberator. It is then
sent further up North to the front near
the Seret river, where it protects the po-
sitions during the entirety of the year
1917.
The Southern front is situated
around the bend of the Cherna river (at
elevation 1050) upon a long route to-
wards the west and south through Ianka
- Buzau - Pitesht - Krainovo - Tunovo
Severin - Orshanova - Timishoara -
Novi Sad - Belgrad - Nish - Veles. There
the regiment defends the positions once
again throughout more than half of the
year 1918. It is sent to the most danger-
ous section of the front - in the Dobro
pole region, where it receives the thorn-
crown of glory. Its retreat back towards
Kyustendil and Radomir cannot possi-
bly cloud the many battle triumphs and
accomplishments during its thirty-sev-
enth-month-long existence alone.
During that time the regiment ad-
vances through the four directions of
the territory of Bulgaria - Macedonia
(in its three parts), the whole of Dobruja
and the Pomoravie. The geographic re-
gions of Vlashko, Banat, and Shumadia
are also visited by the glorious heroes
of the Fifty-third regiment. Bulgaria,
Serbia, Romania, and Austria-Hungary
are all of the states, throughout whose

juridical territories the Fifty-third regi-
ment marches. The regiment’s enemies
from the Babylon-like front of the Tri-
ple Entente are of countless nationali-
ties. Among the regiment’s main oppo-
nents are the Russians, the French, the
Serbians, and the Romanians. However
God knows what the origin is of the
many, many armies, recruited by the
vast empires of the Triple Entente. In-
deed, just the amassment of different
nations makes the war world-wide in its
geo-political purpose.
Bulgaria participates in the biggest
armed conflict of the time waving the
flag of its national unification. Truly,
this is one glorious effort, initiated as
far back as the Bulgarian National Re-
vival and the first years of the existence
of the restored motherland of Bulgaria.
The Fifty-third regiment participates in
all liberating missions in Vardar Mac-
edonia, the Aegean Sean area, and Do-
bruja. Even though only for the duration
of the war, Bulgaria achieves its pur-
sued goal of unifying the main territo-
ries inhabited by Bulgarians in a whole-
some county and accomplishes this in
a short period of time. Moreover, the
county controls territories that had not
been included in the national ideal cre-
ated by the Treaty of San Stefano. The
achieved, however, does not replace the
ideal and become a new national goal.
Unfortunately, both of them are short-
lived, but the first one survives without
being an achievement completed by the
country on its own.
The temporary military borders
born out of the world-wide conflict
are an indisputable Bulgarian achieve-
ment, however, one forgotten in time.
The new borders are obtained with in-
credible effort and at the price of hun-
dreds of lives, either lost, or wounded,
maimed and damaged forever. The
black head-clothes steadily grow in
number, overshadowing the bright col-
ours of the Bulgarian folk costume and
national symbol - the nosia. The num-
bers of widows and orphans multiply.
Who can possibly say what the numbers
are of the unborn children? And the
defeat burns the country, regenerated
and rejuvenated with so much blood-
stained effort, to ashes. The unmarked
graves of the countless fallen Bulgarian
heroes remain in the newly occupied
enemy territories. Where are they and
why are they covered with the heavy
weeds of oblivion? Can the offspring of
these heroes, or maybe just a passer-by,
bow down his head before the greatness
of their deed of valour? It’s highly un-
likely?! The victors of the Balkans take
revenge even on the dead. However, the
remains of these heroes outline the bor-
ders of the Bulgarian national ideal.
The first century separates the Fifty-
third regiment from its deserved place
in history. There have remained not
many folders with documents, issues
from national papers, books with a bib-
liographical rarity and many yellow-
stained photographs of these heroes
and their feats. There are a few belong-
ings, maybe a weapon or two, a military
coat or someone’s shoulder-straps - all
found in old chests of drawers. From
these heroes - and from the countless
people killed in action or those that sur-
vived only to die later - has remained
only dust. The legacy to tell and retell
the stories of these brave deeds of hero-
ism has been forgotten. The mighty
cry of the regiment’s renowned leader,
General Konstantin Lambrinov: “Boys,
Bulgaria will perish - Go onward!!!” -
has quieten. Nothing is the same as
before.

But if the written word is in the be-
ginning, then it is in the end, too. And
this review is a memento of the merit-
ed sons of Bulgaria, of the heroes from
Kyustendil and Radomir and of those
from the other ends of the motherland,
of those torn away from their brothers
in the Bosilegrad region - all march-
ing under the flag of the Fifty-third
regiment. This is also for their offspring
which has forgotten them, for those
who don’t know anything about them,
and for those who’ve only overheard of
their existence. This is also for the few
well-informed - the ones in need only
to enrich their knowledge. This re-
view builds a wall to stop oblivion from
overtaking the memory of these wor-
thy men - much like a written monu-
ment of the Fifty-third regiment. This
is battle force in whose memory there
have been settlements named after by
grateful men and women. Settlements
in Dobruja like Riltzi and Polkovnik
Lambrinovo. The same are those peo-
ple that write the fallen heroes’ names
on monuments in cities, towns and vil-
lages. It’s not much, but it’s also not lit-
tle. However, more needs to be done!
The regiment known to the Bulgarians
as the “flying” regiment and to the Ger-
mans as the “iron” regiment deserves
the effort, it deserves to be remem-
