Zusammenfassung: | Why were seventeenth-century antiquarians so spectacularly wrong? Even if they knew what ancient monuments looked like, they deliberately distorted the representation of them in print. Deciphering the printed reconstructions of Giacomo Lauro and Athanasius Kircher, this pioneering study uncovers an antiquity born with print culture itself and from the need to accommodate competitive publishers, ambitious patrons and powerful popes. By analysing the elements of fantasy in Lauro and Kircher's archaeological visions, new levels of meaning appear. Instead of being testimonies of failed archaeology, they emerge as complex architectural messages responding to moral, political, and religious issues of the day. This book combines several histories - print, archaeology, and architecture - in the attempt to identify early modern strategies of recovering lost Rome. Many books have been written on antiquity in the Renaissance, but this book defines an antiquity that is particularly Baroque |

Why were seventeenth-century antiquarians so spectacularly wrong? Many books have been written on antiquity in the Renaissance, but this book defines an antiquity that is particularly Baroque Lauro, Giacomo / active 17th century / Criticism and interpretation Kircher, Athanasius / 1602-1680 / Criticism and interpretation Lauro, Giacomo (DE-588)122521625 gnd rswk-swf Kircher, Athanasius 1602-1680 (DE-588)118562347 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte 1700-1800 gnd rswk-swf Funde Geschichte Gesellschaft Politik Monuments / Rome / Historiography Architecture, Roman / Historiography Antiquarians / Europe / History / 17th century Printing / Social aspects / Europe / History / 17th century Historiography / Political aspects / Europe / History / 17th century Civilization, Baroque / Europe Barock (DE-588)4004541-9 gnd rswk-swf Druckgrafik (DE-588)4113357-2 gnd rswk-swf Rekonstruktion (DE-588)4136102-7 gnd rswk-swf Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 gnd rswk-swf Antike (DE-588)4068754-5 gnd rswk-swf Bauwerk (DE-588)4112681-6 gnd rswk-swf Europa Rom Rome / Antiquities / Historiography Europe / Intellectual life / 17th century Antike (DE-588)4068754-5 s Bauwerk (DE-588)4112681-6 s Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 s Rekonstruktion (DE-588)4136102-7 s Druckgrafik (DE-588)4113357-2 s Barock (DE-588)4004541-9 s 1\p DE-604 Geschichte 1700-1800 z 2\p DE-604 Lauro, Giacomo (DE-588)122521625 p Kircher, Athanasius 1602-1680 (DE-588)118562347 p 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-14986-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781316576519 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
