Zusammenfassung: | Spanning the entire history of the city of Rome from Iron Age village to modern metropolis, this is the first book to take the long view of the Eternal City as an urban organism. Three thousand years old and counting, Rome has thrived almost from the start on self-reference, supplementing the everyday concerns of urban management and planning by projecting its own past onto the city of the moment. This is a study of the urban processes by which Rome's people and leaders, both as custodians of its illustrious past and as agents of its expansive power, have shaped and conditioned its urban fabric by manipulating geography and organizing space; planning infrastructure; designing and presiding over mythmaking, ritual, and stagecraft; controlling resident and transient populations; and exploiting Rome's standing as a seat of global power and a religious capital |

A city turned inside out Spanning the entire history of the city of Rome from Iron Age village to modern metropolis, this is the first book to take the long view of the Eternal City as an urban organism. Three thousand years old and counting, Rome has thrived almost from the start on self-reference, supplementing the everyday concerns of urban management and planning by projecting its own past onto the city of the moment. This is a study of the urban processes by which Rome's people and leaders, both as custodians of its illustrious past and as agents of its expansive power, have shaped and conditioned its urban fabric by manipulating geography and organizing space; planning infrastructure; designing and presiding over mythmaking, ritual, and stagecraft; controlling resident and transient populations; and exploiting Rome's standing as a seat of global power and a religious capital Alltag, Brauchtum Christentum Geografie Geschichte Gesellschaft Stadtplanung City and town life / Italy / Rome / History Public spaces / Italy / Rome / History City planning / Italy / Rome / History Architecture and society / Italy / Rome / History Christianity / Social aspects / Italy / Rome / History City dwellers / Italy / Rome / History Architektur (DE-588)4002851-3 gnd rswk-swf Stadtentwicklung (DE-588)4056730-8 gnd rswk-swf Städtebau (DE-588)4056795-3 gnd rswk-swf Italien Rom Rome (Italy) / Social life and customs Rome (Italy) / Social conditions Rome (Italy) / Geography Rom (DE-588)4050471-2 gnd rswk-swf Rom (DE-588)4050471-2 g Städtebau (DE-588)4056795-3 s Stadtentwicklung (DE-588)4056730-8 s Architektur (DE-588)4002851-3 s 1\p DE-604 Rinne, Katherine Sonstige oth Kostof, Spiro Sonstige oth Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-01399-5 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139012911 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
