A classic of medieval Jewish philosophy, JVXai-
monides’ Guide of the Perplexed is as influential as it
is difficult and demanding. Not only does the work
contain contrary-----even contradictory-----state-
ments, hut Maimonides deliberately wrote in a
guarded and dissembling manner in order to con-
vey different meanings to different readers, with the
knowledge that many would resist his bold refor-
mulations of God and his relation to mankind. As
a result, for all the acclaim the Guide has received,
many have despaired of being able to achieve even
a rough understanding of it.
Drawing on a lifetime of study, Aifred L. Ivry
has written the definitive guide to the Guide-one
that makes it comprehensible and exciting to even
those relatively unacquainted with Maimonides1
thought, while also offering an original and pro-
vocative interpretation that will command the in-
terest of scholars. Keyed to the standard Shlomo
Pines English translation of the Guide, Ivry s book
is divided into two parts: a chapter-by-chapter
paraphrase of the text and a corresponding philo-
sophical analysis of several chapters at a time, for
those wishing to delve more deeply into the text.
The chapter expositions serve to clarify key terms
and concepts. Corresponding analyses take readers
more deeply into the text, exploring the philosophi-
cal issues it raises, many dealing with metaphysics
in both its ontological and epistemic aspects. These
areas reverberate in Maimonides, discussions of the
nature of God, providence, prophecy, immortality,
and happiness.
Ultimately, Ivry approaches the Guide as Mai-
monides’ journey of self-discovery. And with this
first comprehensive commentary of the Guide in
modern times, the reader will also experience an in-
tellectually rich journey through the thought of the
foremost Jewish philosopher of the ZVtiddle Ages.
