SUMMARY
When the Soviet army for the second time occupied the territory of Latvia
in 1944, Latvian art, the same as literature and theatre, lost its independence.
In recent years there have been many significant studies about this period both
in art, music, and theatre research. In theatre studies there aren't any focused
works in this field, although leva Struka in the monography National Theatre:
Behind the Curtain (2009) comments the correspondent post-war archive
documents from a contemporary point of view. The collection of research
papers 1945-1950: Theatre, Drama and Criticism continues and expands this
research direction by looking deeper into the process of Latvian theatre, drama
and theatre criticism in these five post-war years. In the last twenty years most
attention has been turned to the mechanisms of supervision and repression in
art, leaving behind the not least important question about the part of Latvian
artists in this process. It naturally leads to the problem of collaborationism
with the occupational power. We offer a view into these parallel processes
by analyzing both theoretical questions (for example, the dogmas of socialist
realism, its demands for theatre and drama, the misrepresentation and
enforcement of Stanislavsky's system, the specific features of the national
theatre, the positive character, the novel-epopee and the genre of tragedy in
Soviet art) and by studying both the work in theatre, the staging of Russian
and Latvian Soviet drama and Latvian classics, and the public activities in
the political sphere of the most outstanding Latvian theatre directors such as
Eduards Smiļģis and Alfreds Amtmanis-Briedītis. For the first time in Latvia
there are several papers that are devoted to the problems of theatre criticism:
the collective portrait of criticism in the newspaper “Literature and Art”, the
tracing of the artistic route and the repressions towards critics Aleksandrs
Čaks and Juris Pabērzs. The collection of papers is perhaps more valuable
because of the fresh point of view towards the aforementioned processes by
marking the suspected but not proven regularities but also by the use of new,
until now unknown archive materials.
This is a collection of research papers that are based upon the papers read
in the conference “1945-1950: Latvian Dramatic, Musical, Puppet Theatre,
Drama, Theatre Criticism” organized in 2012 by the University of Latvia,
Faculty of Humanities, the Department of Theory and History of Theatre and
Cinema. Both the conference and the collection of papers puts into practice the
tradition by the Department of Theory and History of Theatre in the Faculty
of Humanities - the researching and co-operation of theatre researchers with
various qualification which leads to productive influence and creative exchange
of views. Amongst the authors are science doctors of art Līga Ulberte, Edīte
Tišheizere, Ingrīda Vilkārse, doctoral students Inga Sindi, Zane Radzobe, Anna
Lange, doctoral student of literary studies Daina Leimane, master of theatre
research Līvija Dūmiņa, theatre research master's students Ieva Rodiņa, Atis
Rozentāls, Gunta Sloga, Ērika Zirne, Dace Putāne, Līva Brice, Vita Grīnvalte,
Agrita Aune.

In the second half of the 1940s Soviet art was regulated by the use of
particular political resolutions. Four resolutions of the Communist Party of
the Soviet Union were published. The resolution “On the repertoire of dramatic
theatre and the means to improve it” (1946) affected theatre, the resolution “On
the newspapers Zvezda and Leningrad” (1946) affected literature, the resolution
“On the motion picture Big Life” (1946) afflicted cinema, the resolution “On
the opera Big Friendship by Muradeli” (1948) was the end of music. In 1949 the
newspaper Pravda published an anonymous article “On an antipatriotic group
of theatre critics”. Nowadays it is ascertained that it was written by a collective
of authors and Stalin. The action of “cosmopolites” affected the field of theatre
criticism.
All these resolutions were hastily translated into Latvian, published in
the newspaper Literatūra un Māksla and henceforth in the most direct way
determined the life of art in Soviet Latvia.
As an addition to this collection of papers we added the texts of Communist
Party resolutions to give a chance for every reader to get acquainted with their
demagogy and violence.
