SUMMARY
After Lithuanias christening in 1386, old
pagan customs such as laments and exceptionally
lavish shrouds were not abandoned but wedded
with new Christian rituals. The procedure of the
actual funeral ceremony finally matured in the
16th century and was still practiced in the 18th
century. A person playing the role of the deceased
would be present at the most sumptuous of mens
funerals, whose death would be symbolised both
by a knight who would enter the church on horse-
back and fall on the floor, and by the destruction
of the insignia of the deceased. At that point the
decoration of the church for a funeral would be
limited to shrouding its walls in black.
The earliest high-rank peoples burials, set
up in churches as early as the 17th century, were
marked by covering the grave with an expensive
cloth. This tradition came to Lithuania from
the East. Tomb flags that were widely spread in
the West were also very popular in 17th century
Lithuania. In addition to wooden monuments
that did not survive, primitive stone tombstones
sometimes cross-shaped were erected in church-
yards and older cemeteries situated further away
from churches.
Tombstones inside churches decorated with
sculptural images of the deceased appeared in
Lithuania only around the mid 16th century.
They were copied from Western Italian painters
who were rebuilding the burnt Vilnius Cathe-
dral in 1530. A relief portrait of the deceased
would be put on the upper part of a standing
tombstone, the part facing the viewer. Two such
relief slabs from the times of the Great Duchy of
Lithuania by Bernardus Zanobius de Gianotti
have survived. The first is dedicated to Chan-
cellor Albertas Gostautas and features a frontal
static figure of the deceased. The second is the
remains of a similar tombstone dedicated to an
unknown woman. This type of tombstone was
shortly afterwards and then for a long time re-
placed by lying tombstone sculptures made popu-
lar in the Lithuanian-Polish Commonwealth by
Giovanni Maria Padovano Mosca. These are rep-
resented by the relief of Povilas Alseniskis at the
Vilnius Cathedral that was started by Padovano
and poorly finished by a different master. Frag-
ments of the relief of Valerijonas Protasevicius
made in Padovanos workshop are also displayed
in the Vilnius Cathedral. This new type of tomb-
stone expanded to Livonia which was part of
the Commonwealth too. It was used for Bishop
Andriejus Patricijus Nideckis’ tombstone in the
church in Cesis as well as for Ona von Pieniaseks
and Georg Rosens tombstones in the church in
Straupe. Sculpture in the round found on the
destroyed tomb of Konstantinas Ostrogiskis at
the Kiev Pechersk Lavra was most probably also
320
used for the most elaborate tombstones such as
the now perished gravestones for Vytautas and
Elzbieta of the Habsburgs by Padovano. The re-
lief of the Vilnius Burgomaster Anastazas Bragas
and his son Antonijus at the Basilian church in
Vilnius stand out in the context of these works,
because the portrait of the deceased is replaced by
the coat of arms.
In the 17th century the number of sculptured
tombstones in Lithuania increased exponentially.
On top of that, the decoration of churches dur-
ing funerals came to be significantly more lavish.
Famous artists often sketched the sculpture called
Castrum doloris set up in churches during funerals
whereas during the actual service a lot of atten-
tion was devoted to funeral sermons, some of
which were published as small brochures. Nobles
were often buried in family mausoleums in which
coffins could be replaced by sarcophagi usually
made of metal. Such a mausoleum, which was
still functioning at the end of the 20th century,
was made for the members of the Radvila family
in the church in Nesvyzius.
Tombstones differed from one another great-
ly. Humbler ones, such as the one dedicated to
the Oginskis family in the church in Kruonis,
still resemble the relief that covered up standing
monuments.
The most luxurious ones featured a large
sculptural part resembling the altar in its struc-
ture, and were combined with different variations
of sculptured lying figures used in sculpture in the
round. Stanislovas Radvilas tombstone attributed
to Willem van den Blocke in the Vilnius church
of St. Bernadine dates back to the first half of the
17th century. The master who made Andriejus
Valavicius’ tombstone, damaged by enemies in the
18th century, in the church in Tytuvenai must have
worked at Willem van den Blockes workshop too.
The huge Leonas Sapiegas tombstone in the
church of St. Michael in Vilnius was made in
two stages. Its older sculptures portraying the
Hetman of the Great Duchy of Lithuania and
his wives was a part of the monument set up by
Sapiega himself at the Vilnius Cathedral, and was
later included into the new impressive whole by
Sebastian Sale. Unfortunately, another enormous
group tombstone of the church in Alsenai dedi-
cated to Povilas Steponas Sapiega and his three
wives did not survive, save for four main badly-
damaged statues.
Several harmonious pieces of sepulchral art
by Konstantinas or Jokubas Tenkala, who was
decorating St. Casimir chapel at the Vilnius Ca-
thedral at the time, must have appeared in Vilnius
not much later. One of them is the badly dam-
aged Petras Veselovskis’ tombstone in the Vilnius
church of St. Bernardine in which, for the first
time, black architectural structure is combined
with white sculpture.
Analogous colouring is applied in the epitaph
to Samuelis Pacas decorating the Vilnius Cathe-
dral. It intertwines a smaller architectural struc-
ture than the one found in tombstones with a
sculptural portrait of the deceased. Another archi-
tectural epitaph featuring the bust of the deceased
dedicated to Kristupas Sapiega and situated in the
church of St. Michael must have been made at
the same workshop. The latter type of sculpture
first appeared in Lithuanian sepulchral art at the
beginning of the 17th century on Kristupas Mi-
kalojus Radvilas tombstone, which was brought
over from Italy to the church in Nesvyzius, and
twenty years later was used as a relief in an epi-
taph to Eustachijus Valavicius in the Vilnius Ca-
thedral. There were big architectural epitaphs in
which sculptures of the deceased were missing.
One of them is dedicated to Marina Skumin-
321
Tiskeviciene and set up in the Basilian Church
in Vilnius. In the mid 17th century Teodora Kris-
tina Tarnovska-Sapiegienes’s tombstone by G.
B. Gislenis with the bust of the deceased made
by Francesco Rossi was erected in the church of
St. Michael. The composition of the bronze half
figure of Jurgis Tiskevicius made by Giovanni
Francesco Rossi and displayed in the Vilnius Ca-
thedral includes the arms. Later complemented
by a rococo pedestal, the composition does not
amount to a complete whole as wars prevented
the finishing of its architectural framing. There
was another half figure statue in Vilnius that has
been stolen. It portrayed Jonas Stanislovas Sa-
piega and was part of a portal tombstone in the
Church of St. Michael dedicated to him, which
also happened to be the first example of this type
of artefact in the whole of the Lithuanian-Polish
Commonwealth.
Next to the artefacts mentioned above and
especially numerous slab epitaphs carrying only
an inscription, there were also tombstones carved
in stone and decorated by a portrait of the de-
ceased painted on a tin-plate. The latter fluctuate
from modest examples decorated with a frame
only to more elaborate ones with a developed
architectural part such as the epitaph dedicated
to Jonas Kazimieras Bzostovskis in the Veliuona
church.
In the 17th century not only the types of se-
pulchral artefacts changed but also the sculptures
closely associated with them. Next to renaissance
tombstones often lacking any religious symbols,
tombstones with religious images dominated by
the figure of the resurrected Christ sprang up. The
deceased were often portrayed obediently kneel-
ing in front of the crucifix like in the relief found
in the church in Videniskiai and Jonas Rudami-
nas tombstone in the parish church in Naugardu-
kas. Alternatively they might be carved in a round
sculpture like in Mikalojus and Barbora Volskis’
tombstone in the Kramianica church.
Rapid development of tombstone art was
suddenly interrupted by the 17th century wars
which caused the destruction of the best part of
the old Lithuanian tombstones, whereas the sec-
ond half of the 17th century saw only a few ad-
ditional important pieces of sepulchral art.
The situation remained much the same in
the 18th century when the actual attitude to-
wards the significance of the tombstone changed.
A long and complicated funeral ceremony
gained more importance over rather more mod-
est sepulchral artefacts merely marking a burial
place. Coffins were splendidly decorated with
cast metal slabs, especially popular at the time.
Tombstone monuments almost disappeared and
were replaced by extended epitaphs that ap-
proach tombstones in style. Materials used to
make them changed too. Beside usual stone and
marble, elements of moulding and woodcarv-
ing were introduced. Novelties were artefacts
made using illusionism, such as Jonas Radvilas
tombstone in the Nesvyzius church. Epitaphs
featuring coats of arms of the deceased became
more frequent along with panoplies especially
popular in paintings. There were some rich
tombstones decorated with painted portraits of
the deceased like the epitaph dedicated to Bole-
slovas Bispingas made by Juozapas Priukneris
and displayed in the church in Ruzanai. Huge
epitaphs dedicated to Aleksandras Jogailaitis and
Mykolas Korcakas enriched with unique full size
figures were set up in the Dominican Church in
Vilnius. Two impressive artefacts that stand out
in rich ornaments or even figure compositions
are the epitaphs dedicated to the Jelenskis family
members in the Vilnius Missionary Church and
322
the epitaph set up in the façade of the Church
of St. Johns dedicated to three women of the
Chreptavicius family. Epitaphs engraved in tin-
plates and moulded in metal made up a separate
largely plainer group of epitaphs.
The loss of independence at the very end of
the century as well as new emerging economic
relations disrupted any further evolution of lo-
cal traditions of feudal nobility in the Lithua-
nian sepulchral art, which in the 19th century
was gradually joining the common stream of Eu-
ropean art.
