The book is devoted to Professor Oladele
Awobuluyi. Professor Awobuluyi is a pre-eminent
scholar and university administrator, a
distinguished Professor of African Linguistics and a fellow
of the Nigerian Academy of Letters. He is one of the very
first set of Nigerian-born linguists who alongside other
white expatriate linguists, in the 1960s at the University
of Ibadan, pioneered teaching and research in linguistics
in Nigeria. The title of this edition was carefully chosen to
capture the essence of Professor Awobuluyi s scholarly
personality as that prized scholar-researcher whose
works have continued to provoke (locally and
internationally) research responses that have impacted
positively on the study and development of Nigerian and
other African languages. Professor Awobuluyi s immense
contributions in formal linguistics (especially Yoruba,
Kanuri, and Edo linguistics), language planning and policy
issues in Nigeria and Africa, and terminology
development drives for African languages are
phenomenal.
This volume contains forty papers selected through a
rigorous assessment process out of the many submitted
for consideration. The papers are grouped into four
sections: Language and Society; Formal Linguistics;
Applied Linguistics and Pragmatics, Language Acquisition
Lexicography. We hope our readers will find these
useful in their continuous quest for invaluable
knowledge.
