Type is Beautiful explores fifty
remarkable typefaces, dating from
the birth of European printing in the
fifteenth century to the present day*
As well as featuring key examples
in the aesthetic development
of typography (such as Casfon,
Baskerville and Bodoni), it considers
others which have made a significant
impact on the wider world — including
the London Underground’s iconic
Johnston Sans, and Comic Sans, now
one of the world’s favourite (and also
most-maligned) fonts.
Also examining the often colourful
lives of key designers in the evolution
of typography — Gutenberg, Nicolas
Jenson and William Morris, among
others — the book explores the
enduring influence of individuals on
print culture and offers a vibrant
cultural guide to the aesthetic choices
we make in order to spread the word.
