The Bafaw Language (Bantu Aio) is a product of the language research
programme of the Department of Linguistics of the University of
Buea. It is the first serious piece of work^on this highly endangered
language, and aims to account generally for the data of Bafaw. The
work. therefore lays the foundation for more advanced work-in the
future. It provides a description of: the phonology, i.e. the sound system;
the morphology or lexis; and the syntax of the Bafaw language. The
worlvgoes far beyond to provide a sociolinguistic survey of the Bafaw
language community, and offers a discussion of functional literacy in
Bafaw, the development of an orthography and the thematic glossary
of the language. The book, provides a useful resource for the Bafaw
language development and an inspiration for further research and
scholarship.
EM M AN URL N. CHIA is Professor of Linguistics, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor
of Internal Control and Evaluation; Former Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge
of Research and Cooperation and former Director of the Advanced School of
Translators and Interpreters (ASTI) at the University of Buea. He has published
extensively in international journals and edited books- He is author of Guide
to readability in African Language.v, African Linguistics and tfic Development of
African Communities, co-author of A Socioiin truistic Profile of Urban Centers in
Cameroon and ¡Manuel de Scmantique et Traduction.
DR VINCENT A. TAN DA is Associate Professor and Head of Department of
Linguistics at the University of Buea. He has to his credit over fifteen journal
articles and book chapters.
DR AYIJ NWI N. NEBA teaches Linguistics and English Language at the University
of Buea. Has research interests include: Tone in African Languages, Language
Education and Language Use and Phonology in General. He has to his credit over
eleven journal articles and book chapters.
