Descendants of Waverley: Romancing 11(story in Contemporary Flistorical Fiction examines
contemporary novelists, such as Susan Sontag. Iain Pears, Jane Stevenson, and Emma
Donoghue. among others, as they combine historical authority and narrative art to
create authentic and accessible depictions of the past. Their techniques challenge
conventional theories that the novel as a genre erased the romance. Contemporary
historical fiction reflects the form of the novel that Walter Scott developed in his
“historical romances/’ which drew on earlier forms, especially Gothic fiction, and
which exploited the fluid definitions of “romance” common in the eighteenth
century. Martha F. Bowden argues that the contribution of recent historical fiction is
interestingly hybrid in combining the techniques of the Waverley novels with features
of the detective novel, the embedded narrative, and the biographical novel. Bowden
demonstrates that the pedagogical elements inherent in the Scott novels continue in
young adult fiction like Rosemary Sutcliffe s work. Authors such as Lisa See, Annabel
Lyon, David Liss, and Julian Barnes treat the romance of history with a playfulness
that releases revenants among the Luddites and wizards into the Battle of Waterloo.
John Prow s theory of the slipperiness of genre is a critical component for explicating
the most recent metamorphoses of historical fiction. The critical framework also
develops from recent and eighteenth-century histories of the novel, twentieth- and
twenty-first-century theories of Scott s influence, and contemporary writers own
reflections on what they do w hen theyr write historical novels.
