RUSSIA AND SERBIAN QUESTION 1804 -1815
Summary
Placing the attitude of official Russia, which in that
autocratic empire made absolute decisions, in the context
of her imperial, both European (relations with Napoleon s
France, Austria, and Great Britain), and eastern policy
(pretensions towards the Balkans, Turkey, Bosporus and
Dardanelles), the author presents all the stages of her policy.
During the first stage (to the end of 1806), it is characterized
by the policy of discrete and carefully guarded support. In
the second stage (the war against Turkey 1807-1812), with
her military and financial aid she endeavoured to suppress
the energetic demands of the other powers (France and
Austria) that Russia should consider as her sphere of interest
only the territory north of the Danube (in Wallacchia and
Moldavia). In the third phase (after the Treaty of Bucharest
in 1812) she temporarily completely abandoned Serbia to
her fate after Turkish offensive. All the time, Russian
political influence in Serbia, while she was striving to create
a state, was very prominent, and at times decisive. On the
whole, Russia was the only great power which, politically,
financially and even militarily helped the insurgent Serbia,
taking always into consideration her own long-term interests
in the Balkans, of course. It is interesting that the Serbian
Revolution and its leader Karageorge aroused a more lively
intellectual interest for the Serbs that before, the best
example of which was Pushkin. |
