Zusammenfassung: | This important new study of episcopal office and clerical identity in a socially and culturally dynamic region of medieval Europe examines the construction and representation of episcopal power and authority in the archdiocese of Reims during the sometimes turbulent century between 1050 and 1150. Drawing on a wide range of diplomatic, hagiographical, epistolary and other narrative sources, John S. Ott considers how bishops conceived of, and projected, their authority collectively and individually. In examining episcopal professional identities and notions of office, he explores how prelates used textual production and their physical landscapes to craft historical narratives and consolidate local and regional memories around ideals that established themselves as not only religious authorities but also cultural arbiters. This study reveals that, far from being reactive and hostile to cultural and religious change, bishops regularly grappled with and sought to affect, positively and to their advantage, new and emerging cultural and religious norms |

This study reveals that, far from being reactive and hostile to cultural and religious change, bishops regularly grappled with and sought to affect, positively and to their advantage, new and emerging cultural and religious norms Katholische Kirche Catholic Church / Archdiocese of Reims (France) / History Catholic Church / France / Reims / History Catholic Church / France / Reims / Bishops Katholische Kirche Erzdiözese Reims (DE-588)1128082381 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1050-1150 gnd rswk-swf Christentum Geschichte Kirchengeschichte Religion Bishops / Temporal power / History Bishops / France / Reims Power (Social sciences) / Europe / History / To 1500 Church and state / France / History / To 1500 Church history / 11th century Church history / 12th century Episcopacy / History of doctrines Authority / Religious aspects / Christianity / History of doctrines / Middle Ages, 600-1500 Identität (DE-588)4026482-8 gnd rswk-swf Geschichtsschreibung (DE-588)4020531-9 gnd rswk-swf Herrschaft (DE-588)4024596-2 gnd rswk-swf Bischof (DE-588)4006949-7 gnd rswk-swf Europa Frankreich Reims (France) / Church history France, Northern / Church history Katholische Kirche Erzdiözese Reims (DE-588)1128082381 b Bischof (DE-588)4006949-7 s Herrschaft (DE-588)4024596-2 s Identität (DE-588)4026482-8 s Geschichtsschreibung (DE-588)4020531-9 s Geschichte 1050-1150 z 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-01781-8 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139084703 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
