Zusammenfassung: | In 1649, Charles I was executed before Whitehall Palace in London. This event had a major impact not only in the British Isles, but also on the continent, where British exiles, diplomats and agents waged propaganda battles to conquer the minds of foreign audiences. In the Dutch Republic above all their efforts had a significant impact on public opinion, and succeeded in triggering violent debate. This is the first book-length study devoted to the continental backlash of the English Civil Wars. Interdisciplinary in scope and drawing on a wide range of sources, from pamphlets to paintings, Helmer Helmers shows how the royalist cause managed to triumph in one of the most unlikely places in early modern Europe. In doing so, Helmers transforms our understanding of both British and Dutch political culture, and provides new contexts for major literary works by Milton, Marvell, Huygens, and many others |

In doing so, Helmers transforms our understanding of both British and Dutch political culture, and provides new contexts for major literary works by Milton, Marvell, Huygens, and many others Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte 1639-1660 gnd rswk-swf Englischer Bürgerkrieg Geschichte Politics and literature / England / 17th century Politics and literature / Netherlands / 17th century English / Netherlands / Social conditions / 17th century Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 gnd rswk-swf Englischer Bürgerkrieg (DE-588)4134026-7 gnd rswk-swf Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Royalismus (DE-588)4178564-2 gnd rswk-swf Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Niederlande Great Britain / History / Civil War, 1642-1649 / Influence Niederlande (DE-588)4042203-3 gnd rswk-swf Niederlande (DE-588)4042203-3 g Englischer Bürgerkrieg (DE-588)4134026-7 s Royalismus (DE-588)4178564-2 s Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 s Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 s Geschichte 1639-1660 z 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-08761-3 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-45792-8 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781316104095 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
