Zusammenfassung: | The year 1916 witnessed two events that would profoundly shape both politics and commemoration in Ireland over the course of the following century. Although the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme were important historical events in their own right, their significance also lay in how they came to be understood as iconic moments in the emergence of Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach drawing on history, politics, anthropology and cultural studies, this volume explores how the memory of these two foundational events has been constructed, mythologised and revised over the course of the past century. The aim is not merely to understand how the Rising and the Somme came to exert a central place in how the past is viewed in Ireland, but to explore wider questions about the relationship between history, commemoration and memory |

Ghosts of the Somme : the state of Ulster loyalism, memory work and the "other" 1916 / Jonathan Evershed The year 1916 witnessed two events that would profoundly shape both politics and commemoration in Ireland over the course of the following century. The aim is not merely to understand how the Rising and the Somme came to exert a central place in how the past is viewed in Ireland, but to explore wider questions about the relationship between history, commemoration and memory Geschichte Politik Somme, 1st Battle of the, France, 1916 / Influence Somme, 1st Battle of the, France, 1916 / Historiography Memorials / Ireland Collective memory / Ireland Memory / Political aspects / Ireland Political culture / Ireland Sommeschlacht 1916 (DE-588)4181782-5 gnd rswk-swf Kollektives Gedächtnis (DE-588)4200793-8 gnd rswk-swf Osteraufstand (DE-588)4172931-6 gnd rswk-swf Irland Ireland / History / Easter Rising, 1916 / Influence Ireland / History / Easter Rising, 1916 / Historiography Ireland / History / 1922- Northern Ireland / History Irland (DE-588)4027667-3 gnd rswk-swf Irland (DE-588)4027667-3 g Osteraufstand (DE-588)4172931-6 s Sommeschlacht 1916 (DE-588)4181782-5 s Kollektives Gedächtnis (DE-588)4200793-8 s 1\p DE-604 Grayson, Richard S. 1969- (DE-588)1061041409 edt McGarry, Fearghal (DE-588)125845138 edt Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-14590-0 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-316-50927-2 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781316550403 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
