Zusammenfassung: | Based on original sources, this important new book on the Holocaust explores regional variations in civilians' attitudes and behavior toward the Jewish population in Romania and the occupied Soviet Union. Gentiles' willingness to assist Jews was greater in lands that had been under Soviet administration during the inter-war period, while gentiles' willingness to harm Jews occurred more in lands that had been under Romanian administration during the same period. While acknowledging the disasters of Communist rule in the 1920s and 1930s, this work shows the effectiveness of Soviet nationalities policy in the official suppression of antisemitism. This book offers a corrective to the widespread consensus that homogenizes gentile responses throughout Eastern Europe, instead demonstrating that what states did in the interwar period mattered; relations between social groups were not fixed and destined to repeat themselves, but rather fluid and susceptible to change over time |

Experiencing the Russian empire -- 2. Bessarabia within the Romanian state: antisemitism reframed -- 3. Committed to change: fighting antisemitism and integrating Jews in Soviet Transnistria -- 4. Under assault: civilians' behavior toward Jews during the Holocaust in Bessarabia -- 5. Jews and their neighbors in occupied Transnistria -- 6. Substantiating and explaining the differences Based on original sources, this important new book on the Holocaust explores regional variations in civilians' attitudes and behavior toward the Jewish population in Romania and the occupied Soviet Union. This book offers a corrective to the widespread consensus that homogenizes gentile responses throughout Eastern Europe, instead demonstrating that what states did in the interwar period mattered; relations between social groups were not fixed and destined to repeat themselves, but rather fluid and susceptible to change over time Geschichte 1939-1945 gnd rswk-swf Antisemitismus Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) / Romania Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) / Soviet Union Antisemitism / Romania Antisemitism / Soviet Union Ethnische Beziehungen (DE-588)4176973-9 gnd rswk-swf Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 gnd rswk-swf Antisemitismus (DE-588)4002333-3 gnd rswk-swf Judenvernichtung (DE-588)4073091-8 gnd rswk-swf Rumänien Sowjetunion Romania / Ethinic relations Soviet Union / Ethinic relations Transnistrien (DE-588)4245233-8 gnd rswk-swf Bessarabien (DE-588)4006036-6 gnd rswk-swf Rumänien (DE-588)4050939-4 gnd rswk-swf Sowjetunion (DE-588)4077548-3 gnd rswk-swf Rumänien (DE-588)4050939-4 g Sowjetunion (DE-588)4077548-3 g Judenvernichtung (DE-588)4073091-8 s Ethnische Beziehungen (DE-588)4176973-9 s Antisemitismus (DE-588)4002333-3 s Geschichte 1939-1945 z 1\p DE-604 Bessarabien (DE-588)4006036-6 g Transnistrien (DE-588)4245233-8 g Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 s 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Print Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-1-107-13196-5 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-1-107-58336-8 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781316443699 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
