Synthesis: Syrian Archaeology in the Past, Present and Future........................................450
Youssef Kanjou and Akira Tsuneki
This book presents the long history of Syria by means of a journey through its most important and most recently-excavated
archaeological sites. Syria was a principal arena for development in early human history as demonstrated there by the
immigration of modern humans, the beginning of agriculture, and the emergence of urbanism. Subsequently, Syria
became a critical corridor for interaction between great political powers and empires: Akkadian, Babylonian, Pharaonic
Egypt, Hittite, Assyrian, Achaemenid, Hellenistic, Parthian, and Roman. It seems that Syria was regularly conquered by
these political powers, however it usually integrated new influences by means of its cultural adaptability. Many innovative
technologies and ideas, such as metallurgy, glass working, viticulture, and indeed alphabets, were developed within the
Syrian cultural sphere.
The text consists of an introduction and 103 articles introducing over 100 sites, written by 113 archaeologists. The sites
cover the time-span of over 1.8 million years and feature all regions in Syria. The authors are university professors and
researchers from all over the world: Syria, Lebanon, Europe, North America, Australia and Japan. All are specialists in
Syrian archaeology and have undertaken archaeological excavations over many yean in Syria. They have contributed their
research data on each site in this book. Readers will understand the importance and true nature of Syrian history. The
introduction outlines the historical context of each featured site. We believe that knowledge of Syrian history will help
readers not only to have further understanding of this country, but also will become a cultural deterrent to the destruction
of Syrian cultural heritage and will facilitate the protection of Syrian sites.
