Summary
The album shows the natural environment, history and cultural heritage of the
Swietokrzyskl region. It Is an area of exceptional tourist values, one of the most
important tourist regions in Poland. It roughly covers the area of the present-day
Swietokrzyskie Province.
Our province lies almost entirely within the geographical zone called the Kielec-
ko-Sandomierska Upland. Its central part is covered by one of the oldest European
mountains, namely the Swietokrzyskie Mountains, hardly exceeding 600 meters
above the sea level, but with a very attractive landscape. To the east and south of
the Swietokrzyskie Mountains spreads the Nidzlanska Syncline, whose original
and picturesque landscape is formed mainly by gypsum rocks which gave rise to
interesting géomorphologie forms, unique flora and mineral waters of extraordinary
medicinal values. The eastern part of the region - the Opatowsko-Sandomierska
Upland is full of gentle-sloped hills and numerous ravines formed In loess rocks.
The Swietokrzyskl region, sometimes called the Heart of Poland, Is an area of
ancient settlements. Its oldest traces date back to the early Paleolithic epoch (about
50,000 years ago). From the Neolithic epoch (about 4000 - 1500 BC) come the
archeological stations, a proof that striped flint was once exploited in the northern
part of the region. In Krzemionki Opatowskie near Ostrowiec one can visit a Neolithic
flint mine. It seems interesting that in our region the settlement connected with the
exploitation of natural resources (iron ore and later copper and lead ores) preceded
the settlement of an agricultural character. One of the oldest European iron mining
and métallurgie regions existed here in Lysogory in pre-Christian times. Then, the
16th century witnessed the origins of the formation of the oldest Industrial region
in Poland, the so called Staropolskl Industrial District.
Since the beginning of the 11th to the end of the 18th century a large part of
the region belonged to the Cracow bishops, hence, many historical buildings are
connected with the bishops foundations.
It is also an undeniable fact that monasteries, especially of the Benedictine,
Cistercian, and Bernardine order played a very Important role in the spiritual and
economic life of the region.
Since the 12th century the Swietokrzyskl region performed also very Important
military and defensive functions against Tatar and Lithuanian invasions reminded
by the ruins of medieval castles.
The industrial role of the area is due to its natural resources. Many settlers from
both other Polish regions and abroad arrived here attracted by iron, copper, and
lead ores as well as rock materials. In the 16th and 17th century modern forms
of metallurgy were introduced by Italian immigrants. The industrial development
of the region was triggered also by large forests, offering energy sources and by
a dense network of rivers. The 16th century was a period of extensive immigration
due to the persecution of dissenters (mainly Lutherans, Calvinists, and Hussites)
in western Europe. They found refuge in tolerant Poland. Therefore, many Europe
-famous reformative schools and educational centres were founded in our region,
for instance in Pinczow and Rakow.
The Swietokrzyski region witnessed many wars, and since the 18th century,
national uprisings. The heroic behaviour of local people during the World War I and
II deserves a special mention.
The Swietokrzyskie region, which over the course of its history underwent
many territorial changes, covers an area of 11,700 square kilometers and has
a population of 1,300,000. More than a half of the inhabitants are farmers. Simi-
larly to the whole Polish country, the region is presently undergoing social and
economic transformations. Kielce - the capital of the province (it has about 200
000 inhabitants) is a major industrial and scientific centre. Industry is dominated by
mining and exploitation of rock materials, production of industrial ware, vehicles,
and components for the motor Industry.
We would like to introduce our region to you by means of an ancient postcard.
It is worth mentioning that some of the first daguerreotypes were created in Kielce.
In the thirties of the 19th century the experiments in this field were conducted here
by Provincial Engineer Maksymilian Strasz, and the first photographic studio was
opened In Kielce by Wladyslaw Krajewski in 1863. The first postcards from Kielce
date back to the nineties of the 19th century, but they are often based on photos
taken much earlier. Thanks to them we can admire and feel the atmosphere of fine
de siecle, when a britzka and a stage-coach were the typical means of transport.
We learn about the lifestyle, clothes, and customs of people living at the turn of
the 19th century. Above all, however, we can gain some knowledge about the
places and buildings which over times have been profoundly transformed, or do
not exist at present.
In sequence we introduce different parts of the region. The opening cards
show Kielce - the city of 900-year history. It is situated in an extremely picturesque
valley surrounded by wooded hills, the highest of which do not exceed the altitude
of 400 metres above the sea level. There were many dramatic and heroic events
in the rich history of our city. From these times come the historical buildings and
monuments of international Importance. Nowadays, Kielce Is an important tourist
centre from which trips to the Swietokrzyskie Mountains are organized. Five natural
preserves lie within the administrative borders of the city. Kielce has a reputation
in Poland as an educational and academic centre owing to the existence of both
big state-owned colleges and academies such as the Swietokrzyska Academy,
Swietokrzyska Polytechnic, Seminary and numerous private colleges.
The old mountains surrounding Kielce are a very important tourist and sight-
seeing area. On tops of the highest mountains one can admire the unique rock
rubbles called the goloborza. In the ancient times the second highest mountain
Lysa Gora, called St’ Cross Mountain, used to be the place of pagan cult. Later
It became the place of Catholic cult thanks to the relics of St. Cross brought here
by the Benedictines.
One of the oldest mining and metallurgy districts of iron ore, dating back to
the Roman times (the 4th century B.C.) developed at the eastern bottom of Lysa
Gora. In the Swietokrzyskie Mountains tourists can admire many sacral and secular
monuments, historical monuments and ruins of old castles. There are also a large
number of industrial monuments. Numerous tourist routes and a well-organized
information network enable a tourist to sightsee the region in an easy and pleasant
way. The highest parts of the mountains are under protection and constitute the
Swietokrzyski National Park.
The eastern and southern part of the province situated in the Nida River basin
(so called Ponidzie) offers many tourist attractions. The hilly land, which owes its
landscape to the gypsum beds, belongs to the oldest settlement areas in Poland.
Wislica, the capital of the Wislan state, played a very important role in the origins
of the Polish state in the 10th century. This subregion is characterized by superb
sightseeing values, both natural and historical. For that reason we also find very
Interesting the area In the Czarna Staszowska River basin, which we call Ziemia
Staszowska.
The exceptional value of the easternmost part of the province, the Sando-
miersko-Opatowska Upland, is due to its cultural heritage, which was created
by the famous magnate families. Sandomierz itself is a major tourist centre with
its Old Town, belonging to the world heritage. Similar values are hidden in the
monuments in Opatow.
Northern parts of the region with the Kamienna River as Its pivot, as well as
areas In the Czarna Konecka River basin contain countless evidence of former
Industrial activities connected with iron metallurgy. In the first part of the 19th
century, a gigantic project to set up metallurgy centres was carried out on the
Kamienna River.
The western part, on the other hand, is made up of agricultural and wooded
areas of rich history and beautiful patriotic traditions. These areas are recommended
for peaceful and healthy pastime.
The Swietokrzyskl Region is distinguished by beautiful landscapes, small but
numerous rivers and clean air which create perfect conditions for recreation while
the rich and dramatic history, interesting architecture represented by all architectural
styles, specific traditions, customs and original folklore decide on the exceptional
cultural heritage. Our album will soon convince the reader of this.
The charms of the Swietokrzyski region are shown to you by means of rather
unusual pictures - old postcards. These unique postcards, frequently coming from
the 19th century, immortalize the landscapes and places, which no longer exist, or
which have changed over the centuries. Thanks to them we can feel the taste of
the places, events and people living in the times when traveling by train was not
yet very common, and the only form of communication between people living in
far-away places was a letter or a postcard. The youngest postcards in the album
come from the interwar period. Therefore we finish telling the story in 1939.
The thousand-year-long history of St Cross reminds us of the enormous role
played by the Swietokrzyskl region in the history of the Polish state. Considerable
industrial traditions, natural resources, mobility and hard work of local people
combined with high tourist and sightseeing standards of the land are a perfect
basis for its development In the 21st century. The Swietokrzyski region is entitled
to take a proper place among the regions of the united Europe. Our history can
prove it. Over the centuries, foreigners arrived here to enrich both the material
and spiritual potential of this area. They were easily assimilated here. Probably it
will be the same in future.
