The Sound Instruments of Romanian Peasants / 252-253
THE SOUND INSTRUMENTS OF ROMANIAN PEASANTS
This work is the result of three decades of field research and expert readings,
upon the variety of musical and sound instruments used by Romanian peasants
throughout several centuries and their symbolism and functions (magic, ritual,
ceremonial and social).
It also deals with the way they are reflected in rural beliefs, in the poetic and
imaginary folk tales and in the context of various rural crafts and traditional customs.
The author offers an anthropological perspective upon the musical instruments he
describes.
His research underlies the multitude of idiophone instruments, starting with
the sounds made by the body and the instruments which accompany the dance; the
stamping on the floor, the clap of hands and the slap of palms on thighs and boots,
continuing with the sounds of the accessories, like the spurs bound around men s
legs, necklaces and bells which decorate the festive costume of women. Part of the
description also includes the large wooden spoons and the rolling pins for dough
baking struck against each other at wedding dances.
Next the author analyses the percussion plaque, used for signaling and
banishing bad spells at the sheepfold, the loose goat jaw mask in the goat ritual, the
cow bells that are also used at the New Year s wishes.
The research also investigates household tools, which are struck to make
sounds for safe keeping, like the spindle and the woolen balls, the rake and the
scythe, the cart wheels.
The membranophone instruments have also been included in this research,
starting with the many types of kazoos - to the friction drums, like the drum with
cord, or the tambourine or the shamanic drum - which are played at the New Year s
Evening rituals. The friction drum with cord and the tambourine are played during the
ritual called Dance of the Bear, or during parts of the shamanic Marriage (the
shamanic drum). Also mentioned are the small drums which accompany the carol
singing ceremony on Christmas and New Year s Eve.
There is also a description of chordophone instruments, like the violin and its
ancient uses, with its self accompanying means of expression, the healing role of the
violin during the sacred dance rite of Calusul, the role and spread of cobza (a sort of
mandolin), the zither and the guitar, the different types of “gordon cello (pinched
and hit alternatively, by a baton) from the regions of Moldova, Apuseni Mountains
and Arad.
The aerophone instruments (the most numerous) start with the body
whistling with the mouth and/or with the help of the fingers, then singing with the
leaf of plants, and imitating the voice of animals with grass leaves.
The functions of signaling, protection and abundance wishes are next to be
analyzed, played by wooden trumpets and beef horns or from the bark of the tree
(birch, basswood, cherry). The bark is also used to wrap the wooden trumpets (which

are made of two hollowed halves brought together). This research examines the
magical implications of the primitive types of clarinet (of grass or thin cane straw) and
the bagpipe-clarinet with elastic reservoir (leather). An original type of marionette a Ia
planchette is analysed, for the movement of which the Piper wields the dolls using
one of his fingers, with which, at the same time he plays to the instrument; the thread
running through the doll s bust is tied around the finger.
Fifa occupies a special place. It is a single-tone whistle, an instrument par
excellence of magic; then the whistles - long with or without plugging, with or
without holes for fingers (end-blown pipes) and its relatives; the important functions
the whistle celebrates in shepherding are also pointed out.
A separate chapter is dedicated to the sound/musical toys, whose variety
reflects the richness of the primitive instruments with magical functions, which also
include those used for calling out. These are onomatopoeic-whistle sound traps ( a
remainder of the hunting way of life), including a horn in the ground, as well as
figurines with clay whistle (and 1-4 holes for fingers), various types of birds (mostly
cuckoos and blackbirds) which are water figurines, but also horses, rams, stags,
mothers with babes in arms, etc.
Also highlighted is the educational role that these toys have played in child
development.
Often the author makes comparative references to the “relatives” of these
instruments which are used by minority ethnic groups within the country and/or
neighboring countries or from more distant geographic parts.
