Whilst the creation of a single currency has been arguably the most significant political project ever
undertaken by the European Union, its viability has been called into question by economic crisis and
widespread political dissatisfaction.
This accessible introductory text provides readers with a comprehensive look at the institutions
and evolution of the Eurozone and the single market, from its beginnings in fixed exchange rate
systems through the sovereign debt crisis. Using theories drawn from economics and political
science, it examines the integration of economic and monetary policy from the Werner Plan in the
1960s to the Eurozone crisis, as well as subsequent reforms to fiscal and financial policy. Written
by a leading academic, it considers why monetary integration was first initiated in the EU, what
part the Eurozone s problems played in the global financial crisis, and why countries were affected
so differently by this. It assesses the impact of monetary union both in Europe and beyond, and
assesses the prospects for the euro as an international currency.
Michele Chang is Professor in the Department of European Political and Administrative Studies at
the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. Prior to this, she was a Fulbright fellow at the Centre for
European Policy Studies (Brussels). She has published work on euro area governance, financial crises,
and fiscal policy. She has taught at numerous universities in the US and Europe, and sits on the
Executive Board of the European Union Studies Association.
