ROMA AETERNA: THE URBANISTIC MYTHOLOGY OF ROME Summary The purpose of this book is to investigate the relationship between the ancient city of Rome, myth, and Roman literature, predominantly poetry, which is usually viewed as a per fect vehicle for transmitting mythological subject matter. The ongoing debate about the problematic status of Roman myth, in which such scholars as Timothy P. Wiseman, Filipo Coarelli, Andrea Carandini, Mary Beard and Denis Feeney were engaged, among others, em phasizes the unique nature of Roman mythology, which was independent of the Greek para digm. All the conclusions that were drawn from this debate revealed skepticism about the famous Dumezilian interpretation of Roman mythology, which referred to the alleged IndoEuropean background of the Roman tradition. Nevertheless, another of Duméziľs proposi tions, i.e. the idea of a myth hidden under the guise of history, seems to be more acceptable for modern scholars. It follows that Roman myth seems to have a special form (as compared to Greek myth) and is somewhat concealed, and thus needs to be unveiled. What is more, it is not archaic , but rather linked with politics and historical events. Therefore, the first chapter of the book is devoted to a critical discussion of the argu ments and proposals that arose from the aforementioned debate. These ideas are then used as a starting point for examining the conception of the city as the main protagonist in the mythical stories that are representative of the Roman culture. The author suggests treating the narratives about the beginnings,
topography and biography” of the city of Rome, which are embedded in Roman poetry, as elements of specific urbanistic mythology, by taking into consideration the fact that a vital part of the Roman mentality was imbued with civic escha tology which was related to the image of Rome. The notion of urbanistic myth is presented in the second chapter of the book, which examines certain traces of this kind of mythological thinking that can be found in different poetic texts, dating from the republican period to the times of the Empire. The analysis of several components of urbanistic mythology lays par ticular stress on Roman foundation myth and the myth of the city s borderlines (which is the topic of the third chapter) as well as tales and prophecies about the city’s supposed death and its rebirth. A poetic subgenre that touches upon the foundation myth can be called ktistic poetry, i.e. a literary form which was known from the Greek tradition, but which was much more impor tant to Roman literature. Vergil s Aeneid is a key poetic work that represents this subgenre. It is regarded as a ktistic epic par excellence; it narrates Rome’s foundation story which is the most significant to Roman culture. The connection between the Aeneid and Roman mythic imagination, especially as regards the city of Rome, is all too obvious, but apart from certain evident examples, Vergil’s epic also features lesser known characters and episodes that are worthy of notice as they represent the characteristics of urbanistic mythology. For instance, 213
the puzzling Virbius episode from the eighth book of the Aeneid is usually considered to be Vergil s comment on the Greek myth of Hippolytus and the cult of Diana; but at the same time, Virbius’ double life can be seen as a reflection on life and death, which was typical of Vergil’s outlook on the world as well as the Roman mindset. Hence, in the fourth chapter, different interpretations of the myth of Virbius are discussed in order to show that he, known also under the name of Urbius”, represents the city (urbs) and its destiny. Conse quently, the Virbius myth is connected with the issues of death and revival, which allows one to perceive the fate of Rome as a kind of mythical katabasis. Thus, this book also studies the myth of the dying city along with the prediction of the so-called third tempest” (trina tempestas), which was to destroy Rome ten saecula after the fall of Troy. The conditions of the city’s demise and salvage can, in turn, be associated with a political and mythical figure representing a charismatic savior, who was responsible for the cyclical renewal of Rome. Some of the features of the literary image of a Roman leader and the city’s rebuilder are investigated in the sixth chapter, Renovator Urbis. The last part, titled Terminus, which is intended to be the book’s conclusion, presents a brief analysis of the afterlife of Roman urbanistic mythology in the late antique, medieval, and modern culture.
