VIII. Summary
In 2004 Aleksandr Nazarenko from Moscow, one of top experts of Russian Middle
Ages, expressed an opinion that the knowledge of genealogy of Rurikovich line is rather
lacking. One can agree with this view although one must not forget that there is a whole
range of better and worse papers on the subject, and their number is constantly growing.
One of the main tasks I have set for myself while undertaking this work was, obviously,
to decisively improve our grasp of the matter. However, already in the Middle Ages
Rurikovich dynasty was too widespread to allow us to cover in one, however voluminous
piece of research, the lineages of all its representatives.
Thus it was necessary to divide the immensity of the material. This volume contains
genealogy of 5 generations of the descendants of the Kiev prince Mstislav Fedor Harald
Vladimirovich Monomakhovich, an outstanding Russian ruler who lived from 1076 till
1132. Out of two marriages he had 14 documented descendants — 6 sons and 8 daughters.
Four of Mstislav’s sons had extended the line: Vsevolod Gavril, Izaslav Pantalejmon,
Rostislav Mikhail and Vladimir called Macheshych. Two of these became the founders of
powerful and important dynasties in the history of Russia. Izaslav Pantalejmon originated
the Izaslavichi line, which settled in Wolhyn, and with time one of the branches of this
house — Romanovich — managed to conquer also the Halich princedom, establishing
there a strong state, which in the years 1199—1205 and 1245—1340 played a significant
role not only in the history of Russia but also in Central and Eastern Europe. Over some
periods Izaslavichi family ruled also over Kiev, Novgorod Velikij, and for a short time even
in Lithuania. Princes of Romanovich house overcome for a while Lublin land belonging
to Poland and Hungarian komitats on the border with Russia.
Then Smolensk princedom became one of Rostislavich family precincts. For a while
the members of this dynasty were ruling over Kiev, Novgorod Velikij and Pskov. In the
second half of 12th and first quarter of 13th century Rostislavichs competed with Vladimir —
Suzdalian Iurevichi and Olegovichi from Chernigov for a dominating position in Russia.
In fact they succeeded to prevail for some time.
It is worth noting that while Izaslavichi had died off already in the first half of 14th
century the representatives of Rostislavich line are living to this very day.
Despite planned confinement of the scope of dissertation it is still very large.
It contains biographies of no less then 117 descendants of Mstislav Fedor Harald
VIII. Summary
801
Vladimirovich as well as those of 10 supposed Mstislavichs. Apart, the paper contains
35 biographies of fictitious Mstislavichs who were wrongly assumed as such or even
invented by historians.
Such differentiation of the three categories mentioned above is a novelty in research
on Rurikovichs genealogy. Until now in the literature on the subject the system used was
much less transparent. It amounted to placing the supposed and fictitious representatives
of the dynasty in generational progressions with more or less indicated doubts concerning
filiation of a given person, or simply disregarding persons of uncertain origin. Another
novelty in these studies is a consistent use of a généalogie questionnaire prepared for
research on genealogy of Piasts conducted by Oswald Balzer and Kazimierz Jasinski.
The questionnaire contains the following particulars:
1) filiations (by father and mother),
2) date of birth,
3) due order of birth among siblings,
4) name or names and appellation,
5) date of death,
6) date and place of burial,
7) descendants,
8) data concerning marriages (often enough more than one),
9) data about spouse or spouses.
Due to specificity of Rurikovichs genealogy, to the above described questionnaire I have
introduced one important specification — whether given person belonged to the category
of princes «privileged» or «not privileged» by chroniclers. This parameter performs an
important supplementary function, especially while establishing nonexistent in the sources
date of birth of Rurikovichs belonging to the category of «privileged by chronicles».
Another important innovation in the studies on Rurikovichs genealogy is the addition
of a large methodological introduction discussing the criterions and necessary research
parameters. This step was dictated not only by my desire to give the reader a precise
presentation of basic mechanisms for drawing conclusions and establishing facts but also
to create theoretical foundations for further research on Russian dynastic genealogy in
the Middle Ages.
The value of the dissertation springs from its widespread sourcing. Here by far the
most important category are the Russian chronicles. Verification of some facts required
thorough use of other sources, both Russian and foreign, including Polish, Scandinavian,
German, Hungarian, Papal and Byzantine. Exhaustive critical analysis of information
contained in the sources brought about of itself excellent results, exceeding the generally
expected results of such a research. It can be noticed that often enough in research works
on genealogy of Mstislavichs (Rurikovichs) information contained in the sources was
accepted literally, without critical oversight, or else opinions circulating in the literature
were given preference over information passed on by chroniclers. This was one of basic
reasons for creating and consolidating faulty fact basis. Reference to scrupulous critical
analysis of the source material gave the opportunity for verification of those facts.

VIII. Summary
Resulting work brings about many changes and precise clarifications concerning fact
basis of the subject matter. The scope of these changes is indeed huge. Great number
of individual facts from the lives of Mstislavichi were corrected or brought to light.
Mentioning all of them would be pointless at this stage. As the most significant and
spectacular changes I would consider the inclusion into the line started by Vladimir
Mstislavich Macheshych Vladimir of Pskov and David of Toropec. These two were until
now wrongly considered as the sons of Mstislav Rostislavich Khrabryj and birth brothers
of Mstislav Mstislavich commonly called Udaloj. In fact the above mentioned princes
were the sons of Jaroslav Vladimirovich who for long years ruled over Novgorod Velikij.
Another example of a spectacular change was brought about by a proof that Eudoxia,
second wife of the prince of Poland and prince of Great Poland Mieszko III Stary was not
the daughter of Izaslav Mstislavich, but most probably had as her father Jurij Vladimirovich
Dolgorukij. This throws an altogether new light on Polish-Russian relations in the second
half of the 12th century.
Thorough verification and detection of many faulty information contained in the
literature so far, and introduction of new learning may be used as a solid starting base
for research on other subjects. It is obvious that genealogical knowledge is important
of itself to understand the past, but thanks to characteristic questionnaire applied in this
supplementary science the method may be extended to various other researches. Only
on the basis of reliable facts acquired through genealogical studies one can research
such important questions as functioning of Russian princes family as a social unit. Such
knowledge is also very useful in the studies on political history of medieval Russia and
other countries it related to. This obviously results from the princes’ role played within
the state and social structures of the times.
I have written these remarks to anticipate possible criticism of my decisions in the
realms of inventio, or simply put — in the manner of setting up the framework of the
subject matter. I am fully aware that «pure» genealogical research may be treated as too
narrow, archaic formula, in particular in the context of modem treatment of social history.
This has been noticed by some German researches (e.g. Dieter Veldtrup, or Tobias Weller).
Nevertheless I still maintain with full conviction that without exhaustive overhaul of
genealogical data of Mstislavichs (Rurikovichs) it would be simply impossible to conduct
solid research on Russian dynastic family in its social and political dimensions. It seems
to me that further expanding so voluminous material by including such matters would
not be reasonable at this stage. All will come in due time. I wish that my study becomes
a starting point for a discussion on the Mstislavichs genealogy and also on Rurikovichs,
as well as on wide spectmm of other problems of medieval Russia.
