Rybak I. V., Skvortsova L A. Villages of Podillya under Rule of the
Communist Party: Settlement Network, Population, Production and Social
Spheres (1961-1991). Monograph. Kamyanets-Podilsky, 2015. - p. 332.
The monograph is devoted to the study of pressing scientific topics. It is
the first time in historiography when the tendencies of the development of
the village settlement network were analyzed on the basis of wide range of
sources. It was found that in the 60-80s the number of village sin the region
was in pensively reducing, becoming devastated and disintegrated. As a
result, traditional big settlement network in Podillya transformed into a small
one, from agrarian overpopulation in the countryside to its devastation. The
destruction of rural settlement network occurred primarily under influence of
irrevocable mass migration of rural population to the cities. It was found that
as a result of migration of villagers in Podilsky village, there started to
develop destructive demographic processes associated with the deformation
of age-sex structure of the rural population, which found its expression in
aging. At the end of the 70-80s the main entity in rural settlements of
Vinnytsya and Khmelnytsky regions were people of pre-retirement and
retirement age.
It was found that at the end of the 80s Podilsky village lost population
reproduction function, and in the early 80s depopulation of the rural
population took place. This phenomenon is the most difficult consequence
and is the threat to existence of the village itself.
The structure of the production sphere of rural areas was analyzed,
which included the collective and state farms, private farms, crafts and
industrial enterprises. It was proved that during the studied period the
production sphere of the village did not succeed to transit from agricultural
to agro-industrial development type. It was found that the collective and
state farm management model could not provide the advantage of industrial
farming practices over agricultural ones. The convincing proof of it, in our
opinion, was preservation of pre-industrial type of agricultural production in
the face of private subsidiary farms. It was proved that the network of
industrial enterprises in rural areas remained very limited, and their material
base was backward and primitive. Based on the analysis of conditions and
major trends of social sphere, it was found that during the 60-8Gs
modernization and reconstruction did not succeed to be implemented. Social
infrastructure of the village in quantitative and qualitative ratio was
insufficient to ensure proper picture of physical, spiritual functions of rural
workers.
Based on the mentioned above, the authors came to the generalizing
result of the research, that in the final stage of soviet construction, the
majority of villages incurred systematic social and economic decline,
degradation of majority of rural settlements of Podillya, which in the post-
Soviet period had avalanche character and led to the total extinction of the
village.
